3 Money Tips to Get You Through the 2012 Election

One Kings Lane Will Start Running TV Ads Sunday Night (DIS)

On Sunday, One Kings Lane will launch a national television-ad campaign for its online home-furnishings store. The ads will run on ABC's Revenge in primetime.

The company didn't reveal its budget, but such ads typically cost $100,000 or more, and it plans for the campaign to continue into next year and expand into print ads, too.

Veterans of the first dotcom boom get the shakes whenever they hear about an e-commerce company running television ads.

That's because of pioneers like Pets.com, which ran TV ads featuring an outlandish sock puppet, only to see traffic to its website actually decline.

But that was well before most consumers had gotten comfortable with using credit cards online and before they'd installed broadband at home.

One Kings Lane and other e-commerce companies operate in a far different environment—one where many TV viewers watch with an Internet-connected smartphone or tablet in their lap.

In August, One Kings Lane saw 25 percent of its sales come from mobile.

So it's far easier to drive TV viewers online than it was a decade ago.

Even Twitter's running TV ads these days.

Fab.com, another online housewares vendor, recently ran a $1 million test of TV ads in limited markets.

Here are two of the new ads, produced by Wieden & Kennedy and centered on the theme that "design is never done."

Sharp-eyed fans of One Kings Lane will note that the company's elephant symbol makes a cameo in both spots.

Steven Tyler's Lawyer Is Being Sued For $8M Over Botched 'American Idol' Deal

Steven Tyler

Steven Tyler is at the center of a new lawsuit in which his former management company is suing his current lawyer

Management company Kovac Media Group claims attorney Dina LaPolt cost the music superstar a $6 million - $8 million deal to return to "American Idol" for a second season as judge after she botched contract negotiations.

The suit never mentions Tyler by name, but refers to him as “The Artist” throughout the filing and states he is a member in a band who had a judge role for two seasons on the popular Fox show.

According to the 19-page suit,

“In 2011, the Artist's contract on the popular television show "American Idol" was up for renegotiation. TSE and LaPolt were responsible for renegotiating the contract. At the time, the Artist's popularity and media appeal were at their peak. As a result of the Artist's stature, the show's ratings were soaring and the producers of the show wanted to do everything possible to make sure the Artists stayed on as a "judge." Knowing that the Artist was a hot commodity to the show, TSE wanted to employ an aggressive strategy in the renegotiations and leverage Artist's popularity to get a more lucrative contract for him. TSE wanted the new contract to be in line with what other personalities were earning on the show. TSE sought to obtain a contract that would have earned $6-$8 million more annually than the Artist's contract at the time."

Tyler's fellow judge Jennifer Lopez earned a reported $15 million to appear on the show, and left after being denied a $17 million paycheck to stay on another season.

The suit continues about teh salary negotiations, saying, "LaPolt undercut [Kovac] TSE’s strategy to leverage the Artist’s popularity for a more lucrative deal. She told American Idol’s agent that Kovac 'overplayed his hand with his aggressive behavior' and that American Idol could get the Artist for cheap, thereby undermining and negating Kovac’s/the Artist’s position in the negotiations."

The suit also alleges that LaPolt then convinced Tyler to fire his former managers and cut Kovac/TSE out of their commission from an "Idol" severance payment.

In addition to the $8 million, Kovac/TSE are also seeking interest, punitive and exemplary damages, legal fees and other costs. The plaintiffs have requested a five-day jury trial.

Tyler and fellow former judge Jennifer Lopez were replaced by Mariah Carey, Nicki Manaj and Keith Urban for the upcoming season of "American Idol."

Where Are They Now? 5 NFL Players Who Succeeded After Football

Not for long.

For a lot of professional football players, that?s exactly what ?NFL? stands for. That?s because the average career for an NFL player is about 3.5 years.

For a lot of guys, they spend their lives playing football. They finally make it to the professional level, then they blink and their career is over.

Maybe they got cut for the final time, maybe it was an unfortunate injury, or maybe they just lost the desire. Whatever it was that ended their NFL career, they found themselves out of work.

Even NFL veterans who play in the league more than a decade and retire with millions will eventually find themselves looking for something to do with their time.

?When players transition from the limelight to real life, it?s a transition most of them aren?t prepared for at all,? says Chris Hogan, one of Dave Ramsey?s speakers who has worked with a lot of professional athletes. ?They have to understand real-world economics, not the surreal world of the NFL.?

Like Chris says, many guys have a hard time adjusting after the NFL. But on the positive side, some former players have managed to make the transition into a successful career.

For example:

Derrick Brooks

The former Tampa star played in the NFL for 14 seasons before announcing his retirement in 2010. After his incredibly successful playing career, Brooks took over as the president of the Arena Football League?s Tampa Bay Storm. He?s also very involved his nonprofit organization.

Eugene Profit

Profit played in the NFL from 1986?1989 after graduating from Yale. After his short (but average-length) career in the NFL, he started working in the financial services industry. Today, he?s president and CEO of an investing firm that manages $2 billion in assets. Not a bad last name for an investment manager, huh?

Michael Strahan

Strahan set the NFL record for sacks in a season in 2002, and he won the Super Bowl with the New York Giants in his final season. But despite all of his NFL success, Strahan might end up being known more for his post-NFL career. He?s had a successful run as one of the hosts of Fox?s pregame show, Fox NFL Sunday. And in September 2012, Strahan was announced as the Kelly Ripa?s new co-host, replacing Regis Philbin, on the new Live! With Kelly and Michael.

Roger Staubach

Staubach played in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys from 1969?1979. He?s one of the most successful NFL quarterbacks ever and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1977, Staubach started a commercial real estate business? The Staubach Company?that sold for $613 million in 2008. He?s also appeared as a spokesman for several companies and is minority owner of a NASCAR team.

Patrick Kerney

Kerney was an all-pro with the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks. After a decade in the NFL, he retired in 2010. Putting his degree from Virginia to good use, Kerney moved to New York to start pursuing his MBA at Columbia.

So, now you?re probably asking this: That?s great and all, but I?m not a football player, so how does this apply to me?

Is it possible that 10 years from now you could be doing something totally different with your career? Or, if your answer to that question is, ?No way!? how do you see yourself advancing in your current career?

If we know anything, it?s that life is full of change. You work hard and settle into a management position at your company, only to get laid off when you finally get comfortable. After years of doing well in a sales position, you haven?t been able to regain momentum since the economy took a turn a few years ago. Maybe new management came in and the job you once loved is now the job you can?t wait to leave?but you need the money.

The response here is to have a plan?to always be thinking of ways to better yourself, no matter how good things are going right now. You can do this through continuing education, freelance work, conferences and networking through social media like Twitter and LinkedIn.

Sure, most of us aren?t making millions of dollars like NFL players, but a loss of income is a loss of income, no matter how much you make.

Your job is to prepare for the what-ifs in life that so many NFL players aren?t ready for. Follow the example of these five former NFL stars and don?t get sacked by life.

AIG to Become Major Global Sponsor of New Zealand Rugby Union

Multi-Year Deal Involves Front-of-Jersey Sponsorship of Six Teams, Including Legendary All Blacks

AUCKLAND, New Zealand--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG  ) and the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) announced today a five-and-a-half year agreement for AIG to sponsor six NZRU rugby teams: the All Blacks, Maori All Blacks, All Blacks Sevens, New Zealand Black Ferns (women?s fifteens), New Zealand Women?s Sevens, and New Zealand Under 20. ?Prominently associating the AIG brand with the legendary All Blacks and the highly competitive and successful New Zealand Rugby Union teams, as well as passionate rugby fans around the world, represents a tremendous opportunity for AIG, the NZRU, and rugby,? said Bob Benmosche, AIG President and Chief Executive Officer. ?The All Blacks? winning tradition and reputation for tenacity, integrity, and performance reflect attributes in AIG?s own culture. We are extremely honored to be the All Blacks? new front-of-jersey sponsor and excited by the benefits that come with the teaming of two world-class franchises. Together, AIG and the NZRU are a powerful global partnership, symbolizing strength and potential.?

?The AIG sponsorship is a game changer for rugby in New Zealand and will take New Zealand rugby to new heights around the world,? said Steve Tew, NZRU Chief Executive. ?We need to ensure the game flourishes at the community level and upwards so that New Zealand can keep producing world champion teams and the best players in the world. A new logo on the All Blacks jersey is not a step we have taken lightly ? we respect the rich and proud heritage of this extraordinary team, and carefully weighed the change. In the end, the AIG sponsorship is an unprecedented opportunity, and the best option to sustain the future of New Zealand rugby and grow the global game.?

The refreshed AIG logo will be prominently displayed in contrasting white on the historically black front of the jerseys and back of shorts for the four men?s teams, and front of the jerseys for the two women?s teams. The new jersey will be worn by the All Blacks Sevens for the first tournament of the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series tournament on the Gold Coast in Australia, October 13, in a game against the United States Eagle 7s. On the All Blacks jersey, AIG?s logo is just under one third the size of the maximum allowed under International Rugby Board guidelines, in consideration of the historical significance of that jersey.

This sponsorship solidifies AIG?s commitment to the sport of rugby. On October 2, 2012, AIG announced that it had entered into an agreement to become the official front-of-jersey sponsor for USA Rugby?s men?s and women?s Junior and Collegiate All-American teams. AIG will also work with USA Rugby to grow its Rookie Rugby ?Rugby in a Box? youth developmental program, an assertion of the company?s commitment to grow the sport at every level around the world.

Mr. Benmosche concluded: ?Rugby is popular around the globe and growing rapidly in the United States, and the top rugby nations align with regions where AIG is strongly represented and is targeting growth.?
