Couples Who Share The Housework Are Actually More Likely To Get Divorced

laundry-laundromatDivorce rates are far higher among “modern” couples who share the housework than in those where the woman does the lion’s share of the chores, a Norwegian study has found.

In what appears to be a slap in the face for gender equality, the report found the divorce rate among couples who shared housework equally was around 50 per cent higher than among those where the woman did most of the work.

“What we’ve seen is that sharing equal responsibility for work in the home doesn’t necessarily contribute to contentment,” said Thomas Hansen, co-author of the study entitled “Equality in the Home”.

The lack of correlation between equality at home and quality of life was surprising, the researcher said.

“One would think that break-ups would occur more often in families with less equality at home, but our statistics show the opposite,” he said.

The figures clearly show that “the more a man does in the home, the higher the divorce rate,” he went on.

The reasons, Mr Hansen said, lay only partially with the chores themselves.

“Maybe it’s sometimes seen as a good thing to have very clear roles with lots of clarity ... where one person is not stepping on the other’s toes,” he suggested.

“There could be less quarrels, since you can easily get into squabbles if both have the same roles and one has the feeling that the other is not pulling his or her own weight.”

But the deeper reasons for the higher divorce rate, he suggested, came from the values of “modern” couples rather than the chores they shared.

“Modern couples are just that, both in the way they divide up the chores and in their perception of marriage” as being less sacred, Mr Hansen said. “In these modern couples, women also have a high level of education and a well-paid job, which makes them less dependent on their spouse financially.

They can manage much easier if they divorce,” he said. Norway has a long tradition of gender equality and childrearing is shared equally between mothers and fathers in 70 per cent of cases.

But when it comes to housework, women in Norway still account for most of it in seven out of 10 couples. The study emphasised women who did most of the chores did so of their own volition and were found to be as “happy” those in “modern” couples.

Dr Frank Furedi, Sociology professor at the University of Canterbury, said the study made sense as chore sharing took place more among couples from middle class professional backgrounds, where divorce rates are known to be high.

“These people are extremely sensitive to making sure everything is formal, laid out and contractual. That does make for a fairly fraught relationship,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

“The more you organise your relationship, the more you work out diaries and schedules, the more it becomes a business relationship than an intimate, loving spontaneous one.

“That tends to encourage a conflict of interest rather than finding harmonious resolutions.” He said while the survey applied to Norway, he was confident the results would be the same in the UK.

“In a good relationship people simply don’t know who does what and don’t particularly care. “Unless marriage is a relationship above anything else, then whenever there are tensions or contradictions things come to a head. You have less capacity to forgive and absorb the bad stuff.”

The survey appeared to contradict another recent one across seven countries including Britain that found that men who shouldered a bigger share of domestic responsibilities had a better sense of wellbeing and enjoyed a better work-life balance.

The researchers expected to find that where men shouldered more of the burden, women’s happiness levels were higher. In fact they found that it was the men who were happier while their wives and girlfriends appeared to be largely unmoved.

Those men who did more housework generally reported less work-life conflict and were scored slightly higher for wellbeing overall.

Experts suggested that, while this may be partly because they felt less guilty, the main reason could be that they had simply learnt the secret of a quiet life.

Feds Arrest The Man Behind The Anti-Muslim Film That Sparked Arab Riots

Benghazi Protest

The filmmaker behind "Innocence of Muslims," the film that sparked riots in the Middle East several weeks ago, has been arrested for violating the terms of his probation.

He's scheduled to appear in front of a federal court today, said Thom Mrozek, a representative for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles.

The filmmaker, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, was convicted on charges of bank fraud in 2010 and paid an $800,000 fine.

Under the terms of his probation, he was ordered not to own or use devices with access to the internet without approval from his probation officer, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Nikki Finke at Deadline reports that federal officials are looking into whether Nakoula violated the terms of his probation by uploading the video onto the internet.

The 14-minute, anti-Muslim movie trailer was blamed for riots in Benghazi earlier this month in which the American ambassador to Libya and three others were killed. As of yet, no full-length film has surfaced.

INSTANT MBA: Be OK With Loneliness If You Want To Be Number One

Ginny Rometty

Today's advice comes from Virgina Rometty, CEO of IBM via her interview with CNN Money:

"Someone once told me growth and comfort do not co-exist and I think it's a really good thing to remember."

Instead of aspiring to be in someone else's position, Rometty advises to create your own path even if this means going-it alone and conquering unfamiliar territory.

She certainly lives by this rule. She became the first woman chief executive of I.B.M. in January and just yesterday added an additional responsibility to her plate. Yesterday The New York Times reported she will become the chairwoman of IBM's board on Monday when Sam Palmisano, the current chairman, retires.

Rometty says that learning to be lonely is a mantra she took from Mr. Palmsano himself. If you plan to be a pioneer, you have to be confident flying solo.

"Be first and be lonely."

Go Daddy Says Deutsch Is NOT Locked In For 2013 Super Bowl

Godaddy

The jury is still out on who will be creating Go Daddy's Super Bowl XLVII ads.

Recently, Business Insider was told that Go Daddy's 2013 Super Bowl campaign would be handled by Deutsch New York. It turns out, the agreement between Deutsch and Go Daddy is not yet a done deal.

In an email to Business Insider, Go Daddy explained that they are "very happy with Deutsch NY and the work they did with the 'Inside / Out' campaign this summer, but we just have not yet decided who will produce our Super Bowl spots."

Go Daddy confirmed it bought two :30 spots for the Super Bowl.

Did Deutsch speak a bit too soon? A spokesperson said:

When we are talking about work we are doing, we are always looking long term for our clients. Basically, does what we are doing today set the stage for our next move? It is almost like playing chess: am I setting the stage for the future? Whether or not we are doing the Super Bowl work, we want to be sure we are always keeping an eye on the future for the brand.

GoDaddy has not worked with an outside agency on Super Bowl ads since 2005, when they were created by the Ad Store in New York. The company chose to work with Deutsch this past June, first on their ads for the Olympics, and now on the company's Q4 creative. The intention is to shift the brand image away from only being know for provocative advertisers to a more sophisticated tech company.

LIVE: Spain Unveils Its Controversial 2013 Budget

Mariano Rajoy

The Spanish government is set to unveil its highly controversial 2013 budget at 8:00 AM.

Click here for live updates >

The budget proposals, which seeks further spending cuts to pave the way for a future troika bailout, have been met with anger in the streets by Spanish protesters.

Spain's most important economic region, Catalonia, is also furious with austerity and is threatening to secede from the country.

Rajoy told the Wall Street Journal that the cuts will focus on restricting early retirement and the budget will also "include the creation of an independent agency to monitor compliance with budget targets, new job-training programs and legislation to sweep away many onerous government regulations."

According to Bloomberg, Rajoy is seeking $23 billion in spending cuts in the 2013 budget.

JPMorgan analyst Jaime Becerril thinks the cuts are likely to fall hard on Spain's regions because "Spanish regions revealed an accumulated budget deficit of 2.9% in 2011, driving the main deviation for the country's overall budget deficit, finishing with 8.5% vs an initial 6% target."

We will be covering the announcement here live at 8:00 AM ET >

Mitt Romney Gives His Strongest Embrace Yet Of Romneycare, Which Could Ignite Conservative Fury

Mitt RomneyMitt Romney fully embraced the Massachusetts health care bill he signed into law as governor today as a proof that he cares about advancing the interests of middle-class Americans.

The health-care law, colloquially dubbed "Romneycare," shows empathy, Romney told NBC in an interview. But it's a move that also has the potential to ignite fury from conservatives who consider it his main weakness against President Barack Obama

"I think throughout this campaign as well, we talked about my record in Massachusetts, don't forget — I got everybody in my state insured," Romney told NBC's Ron Allen. "One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don't think there's anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record."

Early last month, Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul touted Romneycare in an interview that otherwise slammed an Obama campaign ad. It prompted some prominent conservatives — Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter among them — to say that it could have been the moment Romney lost the election

Conservatives' main gripe with Romney all the way back to the Republican primaries was his implementation of "Obamacare" on a state level. The prevailing notion was that he would be an ineffective messenger on repealing the president's legislation.

Here's what Coulter told Sean Hannity that day:

"Anyone who donates to Mitt Romney — and I mean the big donors — ought to call Mitt Romney and say if Andrea Saul isn’t fired and off the campaign tomorrow, they are not giving another dime. Because it is not worth fighting for this man if this is the kind of spokesman he has to respond to this by citing health care in Massachusetts."

There’s no point in you doing your show, there’s no point in us going to the convention and pushing for this man if he’s employing morons like this. This ad is the turning point, and she has nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. She should be off the campaign.”

Today, though, Romney's embrace of his health-care legislation signifies that he is attempting to empathize with middle-class Americans following the backlash from leaked fundraiser comments critical of Obama supporters.

"I think people have the chance, who watched our Republican convention, to see the lives that I've had a chance to touch during my life," he said, "to understand that as I served as a pastor of a congregation with people of all different backgrounds and economic circumstances, that I care very deeply about the American people, people of different socio-economic circumstances."
