This Weekend At The Box Office?Bradley Cooper & Zoe Saldana Hope to Wow With 'Words'

bradley cooper zoe saldana the words

This may be the worst box-office weekend for 2012.

Two new films hit theaters; however, neither is expected to gross more than $10 million.

Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana star in "The Words" about a man who plagiarizes a novel, while a long-awaited Bruce Willis action-thriller from Summit finally makes its way on screen.

Highlights among new trailers this week include a new online exclusive from "Taken 2" and a trailer for a sequel to a box-office bomb.

Out this week: "The Words" with Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana is expected to lead the otherwise dull weekend.

Cooper's new film isn't expected to gross more than $10 million this weekend. This won't be a big loss for CBS films since it's a low-budget production estimated at $6 million

Out this week: The other big release this week is the long-awaited "The Cold Light of Day" featuring Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver, and Henry Cavill.

The Summit film has already earned $13 million overseas

Even if "Cold Light" performs weak, they have the final installment of the "Twilight" series due out later this fall.

Based on the story by Ayn Rand, the first trailer for "Atlas Shrugged Part II" debuted last weekend.

Release Date: October 12

The first film had an estimated production budget of $6.5 million according to IMDB and bombed at theaters grossing little more than $4.6 million at theaters.

Despite its box-office numbers, the sequel has a bigger budget estimated at $10 million.

The Jobs Report In 3 Depressing Charts

The employment report is the ultimate coincident indicator. Along with income, the status of jobs are what says YOU ARE HERE to the vast majority of Americans. Here are three signposts from the jobs report.

First of all, here is the YoY% change in jobs growth. Note that it has generally stagnated between 1.3% and 1.4% for the last 4 months.

image

Typically under a corollary to "Okun's law", which posits a linear relationship between GDP and jobs and the unemployment rate, it takes about 2% or so positive growth in GDP to generate growth in jobs over the rate of population growth. We've had that 2% YoY GDP for about a year now, and the rate of job growth YoY has neither been improving nor deteriorating significantly.

Secondly, the rate of initial jobless claims being made continues to lead the unemployment rate by 1 or 2 months. It suggest that we probably won't see any further improvement in the unemployment rate between now and election day:

image

Finally, here is an update on the scatter graph I posted yesterday, showing the relationship between initial jobless claims (left scale) and job growth (bottom scale). Today's number is shown in orange:

image

This shows that we continue to have poor hiring for a given level of firing compared with earlier in this recovery. That this new trend has persisted for 6 months suggests that we are moving closer to a new recession.

'Warbiking' Is The Newest Way To Expose Your Cyber Security Risks

warbiking computers hackers

It's called "warbiking," and it's exposing cyber-security problems all over London.

With hackers like Anonymous gaining international attention, the emphasis on cyber-security is growing, and not just for governments. Private companies, like Stratfor and the UK's G4S, supposed "security companies," have had recent run-ins with possible insecurities.

One can only imagine how safe individual citizens are.

So one security company, called Sophos, did a survey by bicycle of London, checking the status of private WEP Wifi.

Sophos decided to do some "warbiking," a tactic that throws a man on a bike just like a petty cab, except his passenger is a computer hooked to a special antenna. The process exposed that about 19 percent of surveyed Wifi service used outdated, and easily crackable, encryption, and 8 percent had no encryption at all. The survey was out of a total of 106,874 networks, across 91 miles of London.

“We took one man, a bike, a computer, a GPS, two dynamos and some solar panels to the streets of London to see how many unsecured wireless networks we could find,” Sophos told InfoSec, a cyber security news site.

InfoSec notes that the concern isn't just about hackers, but downloaders who "piggy-back" off crackable networks, ducking copyright violations while the user of the IP address, you potentially, gets fingered for the crime.

"This exercise doesn’t paint the complete picture, but it shows enough to demonstrate that security best practice and education still need a lot of focus," Sophos said.

Sophos added that providers should be using nothing less than WPA or WPA2 networks. A user with a strong password on those networks is virtually "uncrackable." Those networks also should be easy to switch to from WEP, said Sophos.

OJ Simpson Prosecutor Says The Juice's Lawyers Tampered With Infamous Glove

OJ Simpson panel

Alan Dershowitz – who went to bat for O.J. Simpson – and prosecutor Chris Darden traded barbs Thursday as part of an awkward attempt to deconstruct the trial of the century.

Eighteen years after Nicole Simpson's murder, Dershowitz said he couldn't imagine "anything stupider" than Darden's choice to have Simpson try on the notorious glove that had the victims' blood on it.

"He gave the case away," said Dershowitz, speaking at a packed auditorium at New York's Pace University, referring to the fact that the glove didn't fit.

Dershowitz, a celebrity lawyer and Harvard professor, also repeatedly implied he didn't think Simspon was really innocent. "I'm not asserting O.J. Simpson's innocence here. Be very clear about that," he said.

Despite a huge amount of evidence against him, the ex-football star was acquitted of the 1994 murders of his ex-wife and her friend, Ron Goldman, in a trial that gripped the nation because every second was aired on TV.

Faced with Dershowitz's repeated criticism over how he prosecuted the case, Darden said he believed Simpson's lawyers had "manipulated" the infamous glove so it wouldn't fit.

"I was not accustomed to dealing with lying, sneaky lawyers," Darden said.

Dershowitz faced animosity from others on the stage, including Ron Goldman's sister, Kim, and his father Fred, who also participated in the talk. Kim Goldman was visibly agitated whenever Dershowitz spoke, crossing her arms and even turning her back on him.

"This has been a horrible event," Dershowitz said, provoking one audience member to tell him to leave.

To be sure, O.J. didn't come off too well after the event, especially after horrifying outtakes from an exercise video were broadcast on a large screen. In the video, he's jabbing his arms like he's fighting.

"You got to get your space in if you're working out with the wife, if you know what I mean," he said. "You could always blame it on, uh, working out."

Women Are Now The Dominant Gender And It's Turning The World Upside Down

smiling woman

Since the beginning of time, men have ruled the world.

But now women are speeding past men in schools, at home and in the workplace, according to Hanna Rosin's new book The End of Men: And the Rise of Women

In the past, "men had an advantage because of their size and strength," Rosin told us in an interview. But in the industrialized world, brains are valued over brawn.

Her book outlines the evidence that women are poised to take over the world.

"Women worldwide dominate colleges and professional schools on every continent except Africa," Rosin says. In the United States, three women receive a Bachelor's Degree for every two men that do.

The shift is also revealed in the workplace, where 12 of the 15 fastest-growing industries are primarily occupied by women. Rosin writes in the book:

Our vast and struggling middle class, where the disparities between men and women are the greatest, is slowly turning into a matriarchy, with men increasingly absent from the workforce and from home, and women making all the decisions. The story was no longer about the depths men had sunk to, that dynamic had been played out for several decades. The new story was that women, for the first time in history, had in many ways surpassed them.

Men have also been limited by society's depictions of them, and are struggling to conform to a more domestic role, Rosin said. While female role models on television date back to workplace woman Mary Tyler Moore, men are often portrayed as bumbling and dumb at home.

Society can help men by showing them how to adopt different roles and values that will allow them to succeed, Rosin says.

Her book comes out September 11.
