Danica Patrick Wrecks Again, Then Angrily Wags Her Finger At Opponent

Danica Patrick's strong showing at Bristol was ruined when she once again wrecked her car and couldn't complete the race. However, this time it wasn't her fault, and she made sure her opponent knew she wasn't happy.

After more than 430 laps, Patrick found herself in the top twenty and still on the lead lap. But then she got bumped from behind by Regan Smith, spinning Patrick into the wall. And that was it for the NASCAR rookie. But not before she walked up to Smith as he was passing by again, and gave him a good old fashioned finger wag.

Here's the video. The finger wag comes at the 1:40 mark (via ESPN)...

How Flight Attendant Uniforms Have Evolved Over 80 Years

Southwest

Given the ubiquitous nature of air travel today, it’s hard to believe that in the 1920s the public was terrified of flying. (Americans preferred the train.)

But everything changed in 1930, when a young registered nurse from Iowa suggested hiring onboard nurses to reassure the public that flying was safe.

The head of Boeing Air Transport enthusiastically agreed, and Ellen Church became the world’s first flight attendant.

See The Revealing Evolution Of Flight Attendant Uniforms >

The experiment was a tremendous success. Air travel gained popularity, and before long nearly every airline had nurses onboard.

Still, the 1930s requirements for female flight attendants were restrictive at best. In addition to being registered nurses, women had to be unmarried, younger than 25 years old, weigh less than 115 pounds and stand less than five feet four inches tall. The first group of attendants earned $125 a month.

By the mid 1960s and 1970s, most Americans had gotten over their fear of flying. Airline-attendant criteria loosened, and those who took the job were young and trendy. Fashion designers moonlighted as uniform designers, adding style and cachet to the profession. Florentine fashion guru Emilio Pucci, known for his vibrant prints, created uniforms for the now-defunct Braniff International Airways, as did Halston.

Pierre Balmain designed the looks worn on Singapore Airlines in 1964. Italian couture designer Ettore Bilotta is responsible for the uniforms worn on Emirates Airlines today (red leather gloves included), and Virgin America announced this month that its crew members will wear uniforms designed by Banana Republic come August, including fitted lambskin leather jackets for women and zip-up cardigans with red-and-black bicep bands for men. (Passengers can even purchase pieces from the Utility Chic line from the airline’s in-flight shopping portal.)

Today’s flight-attendant uniforms are crucial to an airline’s brand. Classic ensembles, like those worn on Lufthansa and Emirates, create a feeling of luxury, while more casual uniforms—like the colorful mix-and-match styles on New Zealand Air—reflect an airline’s sense of fun. From playful to professional, these designs go above and beyond.

Austrian Airlines

Austrian Airlines attendants dress in red and silver, emblematic of the colors of the Austrian flag.

Female airline attendants wear red-and-silver silk scarves with the Austrian logo and male attendants wear silver ties.

The bit of flash has a purpose: The airline, founded in 1957, operates under the motto “We fly for your smile.” austrian.com.

Malaysia Airlines

Founded in the 1940s, Malaysia Airlines has seen its fair share of uniform change.

What began as standard skirts and blazers gradually took on more character, and today’s female attendants are known for their stylized batik uniforms, decorated with an intricate and colorful kelarai weave pattern from the Malaysian state of Sarawak. malaysiaairlines.com.

Singapore Airlines

Perhaps the most innovative airline on our list, Singapore Airlines clothed its attendants in uniforms created by French fashion designer Pierre Balmain in 1964. Modern day attendants wear an updated version of Balmain’s design, the sarong kebaya, a traditional Malay garment.

The sarong is made from a cotton batik-print cloth and custom fit to each flight attendant as they come through the final stage of the five-month training program. (The standard industry program is five weeks.) The uniform exists in several different colors; attendants begin in standard blue and then graduate to red, green and brown as they rise through the ranks. singaporeair.com.

Hopeful and Scared: Working Through Mixed Back-to-School Emotions

By Dr. Meg Meeker

Is summer getting shorter, or is it just me? June flies into August and as soon as smoke from the Fourth of July fireworks leaves our nostrils, we are back at Staples tossing binders and pencil cases into our carts. Here we are again.

Each new school year brings a wide range of emotions. We are hopeful that this year, our daughter will meet classmates who won?t make fun of her. Our son will do better in math. Our teenager will make the varsity soccer team. We are hopeful, but we are scared. What if this year is worse than last year? Some of us march into September holding our breath. But we don?t need to. There are a few things we can do to help get the year moving in the right direction for ourselves and our kids.

Be Proactive, Not Fearful

First, we can decide to parent proactively, not fearfully. So many decisions we make for our kids stem from fear rather than strength. We manipulate schedules to make sure our daughter has the ?right? first grade teacher, scared that if she gets the ?wrong? one, her year will be miserable. Who says? We make our 16-year-old hit the gym every morning in the summer so that he?ll have a leg up when he tries out for varsity soccer. We can?t see him get cut from the team again.

I suggest that rather than push and prod our young ones into places we feel they should be, we give them breathing room. We mustn?t be afraid for our kids, that they?ll get the wrong teacher or not make the team. Some of these are important life-defining moments. More importantly, we must teach them that they are tough enough to handle what life gives them.

Help Them Develop A Positive Attitude

Second, we can help them develop a positive attitude toward school. If your son loves language but hates science, go to the library and get him a Spanish version of a book series he enjoys, and ask him questions about it. Read books together and casually chat about them. If your daughter hates sports but likes math, ask her if she would like to be in a math club or start one. Don?t make her play basketball, but ask her to go on walks or bike rides in the evenings with you. In other words, be enthusiastic about her strengths and downplay the things that bore her. When parents playfully (not competitively) invest themselves in their child?s interests, kids respond.

Put Them To Sleep

Finally, nothing helps foster a positive attitude more than adequate rest. Like clockwork, parents haul exhausted first graders and teens into my office starting in November. Many worry about leukemia, brain tumors or mono. These maladies are far rarer than simple lack of sleep. Don?t let this happen to your child. Before school starts, rein in bedtime and help his body establish a healthy sleep rhythm. Healthy hormone regulation depends on adequate sleep. Most kids fight sleep, so you need to help.

Great education begins at home. Kids adopt attitudes from their loved ones?especially parents. If we talk to them as though they can handle the curveballs that life brings, live with positive, grateful attitudes, and establish calm routines at home, life goes well. These are small changes for us, but they bring enormous changes in our kids.

Parenting is never complete, but the great news is you never have to go at it alone! Make a commitment right now to gain valuable wisdom from others this year. Meg Meeker?s books are some of Dave?s absolute favorites, and he recommends them all the time to The Dave Ramsey Show listeners.

Pediatrician, wife, mother and best-selling author of six books, Dr. Meg Meeker is one of the country?s leading experts on parenting, teens and children?s health.

Bill Nye The Science Guy Pleads To Grownups Not To Push Creationism On Children

Bill Nye, host of the popular education program Bill Nye the Science Guy, is speaking out against creationism in a new video for Big Think.

"You're world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution," he says.

And he's pleading to adults not to push creationism on children.

"And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine," he says. "But don't make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future."

Here's the whole video Big Think via YouTube (hat tip to Hale Stewart):

Obama Denies Really Hating Mitt Romney

Barack ObamaPresident Barack Obama slammed Mitt Romney as a candidate holding "extreme positions" but denied any harsh personal feelings of dislike during an interview with The Associated Press published Saturday.

Obama said Romney has painted himself into a corner with the "extreme positions":

"I can't speak to Governor Romney's motivations. What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday, before the flap that ensued Friday over Romney's joke pertaining to Obama's birth certificate.

The AP's Ben Feller, who conducted the interview, writes that Obama veered away from any questions of personal animosity toward the presumptive Republican nominee and his running mate, Paul Ryan

In Politico reporter Glenn Thrush's e-book, Obama's Last Stand, Thrush reports that Obama developed a "genuine disdain" for Romney. But Obama told Feller that he doesn't "really know him well."

In the AP interview, Obama took typical shots at Romney. On women's issues, he said Romney would "not stand in the way" of a bill that "stripped away women's control over their reproductive health." On the issue of Romney's tax returns, he hit him for not being transparent. And on fixing a still-weak economy, he portrayed Romney as extreme.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that. But Governor Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class."

The Romney campaign jumped on the bolded part of Obama's quote.

“President Obama concedes that ‘we aren’t where we need to be.’ Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said in an email. "The American people know they aren’t better off than they were four years ago."

Not Even Bernanke Knows What'll Happen When The Fed Sell Trillions Of Dollars Worth Of Bonds

Ben Speaks

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) wrote a letter to  Ben Bernanke and Ben wrote back. The WSJ’s Jon Hilsenrath covered the story (Link). Not surprisingly, Hilsenrath spins the exchange of letters as a triumph for Big Ben.

Bernanke defends the Fed’s efforts as well as he can. But in the absence of definitive information on the success of QE, ZIRP and Twist, the best Ben can do is argue, “it coulda been worse”:

“the Fed’s bond-buying of recent years has helped to promote a stronger recovery than otherwise would have occurred”

Really Ben? In the darkest days of 2008 and 2009 the Fed took actions that helped avoid a complete collapse. But there is very little evidence (if any) to support Bernanke’s claim since then.

There is one section in Bernanke’s letter that got to me.  Issa asked if it were premature to consider additional monetary moves, Bernanke responded:

the Fed must make policy in light of a forecast of the future performance of the economy

Come on Ben, your economic crystal ball is cloudy. Want proof?

krasting

kasting

Issa questioned the risks the country faces when the Fed is ultimately forced to reverse its policies and begin to reduce the size of its balance sheet. Bernanke blows off those concerns with:

The Fed will normalize the size of its balance sheet through gradual pre-announced sales in order to ensure that markets have an appropriate amount of time to make adjustments.

This statement is a lie.

Bernanke has no idea what will happen to the credit markets once the Fed starts selling the trillions of bonds it has bought. The Fed has never done this before in history. How can Bernanke be so confident of something when there is no road map? To believe that it will be just as easy to sell bonds, as it has been to buy them, is just ridiculous. When the Fed does start selling, the capital markets (and the economy) will shudder. Bernanke knows this is true.

Bernanke is not going to be the head of the Fed when the selling of those bonds starts to happen. His term will run out before the pendulum shifts. He is setting this up so that the “next guy” has to clean up the mess.

And Ben is going to do more. From the 8/22 letter:

“There is scope for further action by the Federal Reserve to ease financial conditions and strengthen the recovery”

This talk means that Ben is going to up the stakes once again. He will undertake more emergency monetary measures. The “buck” that he is passing to the “next guy” is going to get bigger. Bernanke will be retired at Del Boca Vista when this blows up.

Republicans in Hot Water

Who was it in the Republican party that chose to have a convention at a seaport in Florida at the peak of the hurricane season? What were they thinking of?

The Tampa Bay Times Forum is where the Republicans are supposed to be spending Tuesday. Think of an auditorium filled will delegates wearing silly hats and waving state flags.  This picture shows the location of this well-chosen venue. It’s right on the water, and yes, that’s an ocean liner parked nearby.

krasting.

krasting

The good news for the Republicans (and the rest of the folks in Tampa) is that Issac appears to be drifting away from a direct hit. The bad news is that Isaac is going to strengthen quite a bit before it passes by.

The hottest ocean water at any location in American waters today just happens to be in Tampa Bay (89 degrees). The area from the Florida Keys north, is also very hot relative to the rest of the Gulf of Mexico. There’s plenty of fuel to make this storm grow.

 krasting

.

If you’re left wondering why the deep thinkers in the Republican Party chose Tampa, consider this opinion piece in the local paper today. Have fun Republicans!
