EntreLeader Spotlight: Brenda Dubatowka

EntreLeadership is not just a theory. Thousands of business owners and leaders are using Dave?s principles every day to take their companies and team members to heights they never imagined. In the EntreLeadership Spotlight series, we?ll be highlighting some of these great leaders and learning about their dreams, motivation and secrets to success.

What I Do

I am one of the owners of Alta Via Technologies, Inc., in Livermore, California. Alta Via is a printed circuit board (PCB) design service bureau. We provide PCB design consulting services to key companies in the Silicon Valley. We are in our 10th year of business.

A Characteristic Every Leader Should Possess

Without integrity, a leader may be tempted to do the quick, easy or unethical thing. With integrity, a leader will choose wisely and, in the long run, be successful.

My Mentor

When I first started working in the tech industry, it seemed like a foreign country. Thank goodness for my team leader, Bob Stevens. He guided me through it all by setting an example of how to lead, educate, give great customer service, and, above all, have a great attitude. Bob now works at a larger company in a different sector of technology. Even though we no longer work together, he is still my mentor. We are in contact monthly, and I still listen to and absorb everything he says.

My Best Leadership Advice

To treat others as you would want to be treated, and listen, listen and then listen. Be confident to implement your ideas, even if there are naysayers on your team. When you show that you are 100% behind an idea and are confident in the results it can obtain, your team will follow your lead.

Best Lesson Learned

To take time in the hiring process. Don?t rush because you are in panic mode and need a body. When you hire that way, you will usually end up with the wrong person.

My Greatest Passions

  1. Faith ? When the world tells you that you can?t, faith tells you that you can.
  2. Family ? My family has been the number-one motivation in my professional life. Early in my marriage, I had to leave behind my dream of being a stay-at-home mom and enter the workforce after my husband had a devastating work accident. When I was working two jobs, the one thing that kept me going was the knowledge that I was providing for my family and it was necessary to keep our lives on track.
  3. Fitness ? I have always loved fitness and wellness. I worked in the fitness industry for many years and am now planning a wellness program for our company. A healthy body and soul translates into motivated and productive team members.

How I Keep My Competitive Edge

Provide the best customer service and stay on top of the newest technology. In our industry, things can change not just daily but hourly. We strive to give our customers the best service by keeping up with everything and implementing their requests.

My Favorite Part of the Job

The opportunity to learn something new every day. There are so many challenges in the tech industry, and to keep up is exciting. Sometimes I don?t want to change or learn something new. Then I remind myself that change is good. What I am learning will make me more efficient at my job, resulting in better service for my customers.

Italian Authorities Said To Uncover $465,000 Payment From Lance Armstrong To Banned Doctor Michele Ferrari

lance armstrong

An Italian prosecutor has reportedly uncovered a $465,000 payment made to Italian doctor Michele Ferrari by Lance Armstrong in 2006, Shane Stokes of VeloNews reports.

News of the payment was originally reported by La Gazetta dello Sport, an Italian publication, VeloNews says.

The payment has not been confirmed.

The doctor, Michele Ferrari, began working with Lance Armstrong prior to his being diagnosed with cancer in 1996. The relationship continued after Armstrong returned to cycling in 1998. Ferrari was later sanctioned by Italian sports authorities, leading many to question why Armstrong was still working with him.

The Italian prosecutor has reportedly uncovered payments totaling 30 million euros to Ferrari from more than 90 cyclists over the years. In recent years, Ferrari has reportedly attempted to conceal his involvement with these cyclists by using foreign cell-phones, a mobile camper-van, and intermediaries.

Last year, Lance Armstrong's spokesperson admitted that Armstrong has maintained contact with Ferrari over the years, but also said that the professional relationship between the two ended in 2004.

The payment that the Italian authorities have reportedly uncovered was made in 2006.

This payment followed Lance Armstrong's winning a court case with one of his sponsors which awarded him $7.5 million in bonus, penalties, and interest. The speculation is that a portion of this bonus was owed to Ferrari and that the payment was related to that.

(If that's true, it is still possible that the professional relationship between Dr. Ferrari and Armstrong ended in 2004, as the spokesman said. The payment could merely have followed later. This makes sense given that Armstrong retired from racing in 2005.)

Lance Armstrong has never explained in detail what services or treatment Dr. Ferrari gave him, beyond vague references to a training regimen. Several other cyclists associated with Ferrari, such as Alexandre Vinokourov, have been tossed out of races for doping violations. Vinokourov, for example, called Ferrrari his "coach" prior to the 2007 Tour de France and was subsequently thrown out of the race for an illegal blood transfusion, VeloNews also reports.

This news is the latest in the Lance Armstrong saga, which returned to the headlines last week when the US Anti-Doping Agency filed formal doping charges against Armstrong. It has also just been revealed that several of Armstrong's former teammates mysteriously withdrew their names from consideration for the US Olympic team, a decision that may be linked to the doping investigation.

NOTE: Almost everyone has strong feelings about the Armstrong case, both pro and con. Lance Armstrong's supporters fiercely support him and don't want to see his amazing accomplishments tarnished any more than they already have been (and, doped or not, the accomplishments are still amazing). They also point out that this is all very old news and that the country has better things to focus on. Others, meanwhile, simply want to know the truth. I'm in the latter camp. I followed Lance Armstrong's Tour victories minute by minute, and those and his charitable work have always been hugely inspiring to me. Based on all that has come out about cycling in the past decade, I have come to assume that pretty much everyone in the sport doped and that you had to dope if you wanted to be competitive. Given this, I can certainly understand why Lance Armstrong would have doped, and if he did, I'm not going to get on some huge moral high horse about his "cheating." ("Cheating" gives you an unfair advantage over the rest of the field. You don't get that if everyone else in the field is doing the same thing.) If Lance Armstrong didn't dope, meanwhile, and everyone else--including his teammates--did, his accomplishments are that much more staggering. And inasmuch as we've come this far, I want to know the truth

The Head Of Greece's Neo-Nazi Party Is The Only One Really Happy About Tonight's Outcome

ATHENS, GREECE: There he is... Nikolaos Michaloliakos the head of the Golden Dawn party (which is Greece's Neo-Nazi party) just appeared gloating on TV, after his party took over 6% of the vote, and re-entered parliament.

Of all the candidates, he seems the most happy (and smug) about his result.

What Advertisers Find Out About You When You Click 'Like' On Facebook

girl facebook likes thumbs up

Facebook knows a lot about each of its users, of course, but it offers you options to make your account as private as possible. But that doesn't stop advertisers from drawing data from the social network, and using it to target you with ads.

Skip directly to the data >

Last week, a new company, Likester, launched "Likester AdCenter," a tool that analyzes the vast trove of  data that Facebook generates from people hitting the "Like" button—750 million likes and counting. Here's how founder Kevin McCarthy says it works:

You can put any company into the Likester search engine, and learn a tremendous amount about that company’s fans, including what books they read, TV shows they watch, movies they watch, and other companies that they like, and so on.

We gave McCarthy a sample list of interesting companies—Walmart, Lululemon, Starbucks, etc.—and asked him to show us what the Likester database reveals about you when you "like" any of those brands.

The results are both surprising and depressing. Who knew that Stride Gum and Lynyrd Skynyrd were so popular among shoppers? On the other hand, all the stereotypes about fans of Harley Davidson and Pabst Blue Ribbon seem to be true—they like Larry the Cable Guy and The Melvins, respectively.

And you won't believe the ugly truth about Yankees and Red Sox fans ...

If you like Walmart, you might also like black actors, country singers and Megan Fox.

Walmart has 16,438,404 likes, more than most brands. It's not too surprising that people who like Walmart are 91 times more likely to also like Febreze and 87 times more likely also like Lysol.

Oddly, they're also 6.5 times more likely than average to also like Megan Fox. Black actors and country and western singers also index more highly with Walmart likers than other entertainers.

Here's a selection of brands Walmart's fans are more likely to favor. The numbers represent how many times more likely it is that a Walmart liker has also hit "Like" for the named brand:

  • Stride Gum 71
  • The Hollywood Gossip 69
  • JustMySize (a plus-size clothing brand) 67
  • Trace Adkins 38
  • Reba McEntire 37
  • Bernie Mac 35
  • Bret Michaels 33.4
  • Jada Pinkett Smith 29
  • Sanaa Lathan 23
  • Taraji Henson 23
  • Ashton Kutcher 11
  • Will Smith 10.5

But ... Walmart likers are only 6.5 times more likely than average to also like Megan Fox.

If you like Lululemon, you might also like The New York Post, puppies and these obscure twin models.

Lululemon has 623,297 likes on Facebook. Fans of the cult-like yoga brand are very specific about their likes—most of their cross-referenced likes went to other yoga and fitness brands. Here are the more quirky brands on their radar:

  • Kristi Blicharski ~ Creating Your Bliss 667 (Blicharski is a "happiness coach").
  • The Daily Muse 659 times (a career advice site).
  • Michelle Underground 629 (a yoga celebrity).
  • Eileen Fisher 616
  • Page Six 616 (The New York Post's gossip page)
  • Can this puppy get more fans that Justin Bieber? 599
  • Tom And Gary's Decentralized Dance Party 575
  • Alyssa Reid 539 times (singer)
  • Talley Twins 575 (models)

If you like Starbucks, you might also like Barbie, Wet Seal and Hello Kitty.

Starbucks, which has 30,443,461 likes, is pretty much for girls, according to Likester's data:

  • Tubing 18
  • Barbie 17
  • Wet Seal 15
  • Batman 15
  • Trident Chewing Gum 15
  • Hot Topic 14
  • Dairy Queen 13
  • Juicy Couture 13
  • Hello Kitty 12

Your Complete Guide To Today's Greek Elections

greece decision june 2012

Investors are anxiously waiting the results of today's parliamentary elections in Greece, a repeat of elections on May 6 that failed to produce a government.

As the leading opposition party repudiates the terms of the aid package Greece has received from the European Union and the IMF, European leaders led by Germany insist that this vote is a referendum on Greece's euro membership, and that there will be no wiggle room to negotiate the bailout deal.

Brinksmanship at its best.

Here's a look at the Greek players:

  • antonis samaras greeceAntonis Samaras and New Democracy: Samaras and New Democracy once frightened European leaders when they took a tougher stance against austerity, but remarkably their party has come full circle to represent the pro-bailout incumbency. While Samaras has now called for some changes to the terms of the deal which would ease downward pressure on the Greek economy, ND's commitment to the bailout and euro membership dictate its policies. New Democracy won 18.9 percent of the vote on May 6.

  • Alexis TsiprasAlexis Tsipras and SYRIZA: Tsipras and his party argue that Greek's bailout agreement is untenable because harsh austerity policies have forced the country into a Great Depression from which recovery in the medium-term is unlikely. They argue that Europe has much to lose from a Greek exit, and therefore EU leaders are bluffing when they frame the elections as a referendum on the euro and refuse to consider any amendments to Greece's bailout agreement. SYRIZA won 16.8 percent of the vote on May 6, and appeared to win support directly after those elections.

  • Evangelos VenizelosEvangelos Venizelos and PASOK: PASOK led the Greek government from June 2009-November 2011, and support for the party declined dramatically as the crisis worsened. Analysts expect little dissension between PASOK and New Democracy on the bailout. PASOK won 13.2 percent of the vote on May 6.

While four other parties also won seats in the May election, analysts are focusing on the success of these three parties primarily because both SYRIZA and ND-PASOK governments will face difficulty winning support from other parties.

As a newly created party, SYRIZA incorporates a smattering of radical, unfocused political views, many of which are at odds with other fringe parties.

Then again, support for ND-PASOK is fragile, as both parties supported a program which has been devastating to the Greek economy. What's more, their long tenure as the two primary Greek parties has earned them a reputation of corruption and backwardness.

cartoonThe problem for Europe

A disorderly Greek exit from the eurozone could be disastrous. Not only would it provoke bank runs in other troubled European countries like Spain, Italy, Ireland, and Portugal, it would compromise investor faith in the basic tenets of the euro system.

That said, European leaders are arguing that they could manage a "Grexit," and thus generally refuse to renegotiate the terms of the Greek bailout. Europeans are loathe to devote more money to a country that flouts regulations, spent itself into a hole, and cooked its books.

Even if the pro-bailout parties win, however, Europe will likely have to give some ground to Greece, either in the form of more aid or stimulus, extensions on international loans, or even another structured debt restructuring. Greece and its banking system are still insolvent, and without growth there is no way they will return to solvency.

 Three election outcomes are possible:

  • New Democracy wins and can form a coalition with PASOK: New Democracy probably has to win the most votes outright because the leading party earns a 50-seat bonus. With PASOK, ND can secure more than 151 seats and form a ruling coalition. While it is unlikely that another party will join this effort, the Democratic Left could potentially be swayed to join the coalition.

  • SYRIZA wins enough support to form a government: While unlikely, it is feasible that SYRIZA could win some 40.4 percent of the vote, making it a viable coalition on its own. This would save it from having to negotiate with other fringe parties, whose support would likely be difficult to engage. No matter how it formed, such an anti-bailout coalition would bode ill for EU leaders, and for markets.

  • Deadlock: It is highly likely that the distribution of political support has not changed significantly from May 6. As in May, all parties would have difficulty forming governments and Greece would be forced into another round of elections. Europe is likely to halt aid payments to Greece until the elections are sorted out, but a looming bond payment on August 20 could induce investor angst.

Polling closes at 12 PM ET and flash estimates are published almost immediately afterwards. Those results will give us the first hint at how the elections played out.
