Is MercadoLibre's Growth for Real?

Don't let it get away!

MercadoLibre (Nasdaq: MELI  ) carries $70 million of goodwill and other intangibles on its balance sheet. Sometimes goodwill, especially when it's excessive, can foreshadow problems down the road. Could this be the case with MercadoLibre?

Before we answer that, let's look at what could go wrong.

AOL blows up
In early 2002, AOL Time Warner was trading for $66.27 per share. It had $209 billion of assets on its balance sheet, and $128 billion of that was in the form of goodwill and other intangible assets. Goodwill is simply the difference between the price paid for a company during an acquisition and the net assets of the acquired company. The $128 billion of goodwill in this case was created when AOL and Time Warner merged in 2000.

The problem with inflating your net assets with goodwill is that it can -- being intangible, after all -- go away if the acquisition or merger doesn't create the amount of value that was expected. That's what happened in AOL Time Warner's case. It had to write off most of the goodwill over the next few months, and one year later that line item had shrunk to $37 billion. Investors punished the stock along the way, sending it down to $27.04 -- or nearly a 60% loss.

In his fine book It's Earnings That Count, Hewitt Heiserman explains the AOL situation and how two simple metrics can help minimize your risk of owning a company that may blow up like this. Let's see how MercadoLibre holds up using his two metrics.

Intangible assets ratio
This ratio shows us the percentage of total assets made up by goodwill and other intangibles. Heiserman says he views anything over 20% as worrisome, "because management might be overpaying for the acquisition or acquisitions that gave rise to the goodwill."

MercadoLibre has an intangible assets ratio of 21%. This is not so far over Heiserman's threshold as to cause panic, but you'll want to keep an eye on this number over the next few quarters. It's also useful to compare it to tangible book value.

Tangible book value
Tangible book value is simply what remains after subtracting goodwill and other intangibles from shareholders' equity. If this is not a positive value, Heiserman advises you to run away because such companies may "lack the balance sheet muscle to protect themselves in a recession or from better-financed competitors."

MercadoLibre's tangible book value is $135 million, so no yellow flags here.

Foolish bottom line
If you own MercadoLibre, or any other company that fails one of these checks, make sure you understand the business model and management's objectives. You can never base an entire investment thesis on one or two metrics, but there is one yellow flag here. I'll help you keep a close eye on these ratios over the next few quarters by updating them soon after each earnings report.

Keep up with MercadoLibre, including news and analysis as it's published, by adding the company to your free, personalized watchlist.

The 10 Most Romantic Hotels In The U.S.

This post originally appeared at Travel + Leisure.

Imagine you and your better half cuddling fireside as the sun dips behind the distant mountains. The only sounds are from the wild; the only sights are canyons and the stark desert. No, you’re not in the Sahara. You’re at Utah’s ultra-romantic Amangiri resort.

With Valentine’s Day looming and no end to winter in sight, who doesn’t dream of stealing away on vacation? But you don’t need to travel to the ends of the earth (or beloved spots like Paris or the Caribbean) to find that spark-kindling setting. From seaside New England to Washington State’s wine country, we’ve uncovered dreamy properties certain to get you in the mood—whatever your idea of romance and your price range.

You can take your love to literal new heights at Big Sur’s Post Ranch Inn, a cliff-top hotel whose treehouses and cottages perch a thousand feet above the Pacific. The policy of no clocks or televisions encourages couples to reconnect, while perks like a gratis convertible inspire drives along scenic Highway 1 with impromptu picnics on any of the breathtaking beaches.

Of course, romance doesn’t require endless water views; cozying up in a country bed-and-breakfast has its own appeal. Hillside Victorian cottages with a white picket fence and fairy-tale-like setting draw couples year round to Landrum, SC, where they check into the affordable Red Horse Inn. Blame its high occupancy rate on the waterfalls, rocking chairs, and in-room candlelit dinners.

Great country inns know just how to take care of their guests, and indeed many of our favorite romantic hotels are a quick jaunt but worlds away from major cities. It’s about a two-hour drive from Phoenix to an enchanting resort of adobe suites with kiva fireplaces set among the red-rock canyons of Sedona, while 2 1/2 hours gets you from Atlanta to a Blue Ridge Mountains retreat.

And sometimes, romance is just a subway ride away. Lovebirds who want to fall in love with their hometown all over again—or flock to a hotel with urban sophistication—can look no further than actor Robert De Niro’s Greenwich Hotel in New York City.

Read on to find the perfect romantic hotel for you two and make that daydreamed getaway a reality.

Stupid With Zeroes: 6 Stupid Taxes to Avoid

Income tax, sales tax, property tax ? does the list ever end?

Most of us agree that we have too many taxes, but we?ve come to accept that they?re just a fact of life. The good news is there?s one tax you can keep from paying?the stupid tax.

The tough thing about stupid tax is it?s like the anti-gift that keeps on taking. Some people make a poor decision that will follow them around for years, even decades. But just because you paid a stupid tax in the past doesn?t mean you have to pay one in the future. With that in mind, here are the most common stupid taxes and how to avoid them.

The Lottery

If you routinely play the lottery, you should do this instead: Hop in your car, open your windows, and drive down the interstate. As you drive, flick one-dollar bills out into the roaring wind. That will have the same effect as playing the lottery. Even better, you?ll provide a lonesome drifter with a few dollars cash.

How to Avoid: Drop those singles into a jar instead of playing the lottery. Once a year, transfer that money to your 401(k) or your kids? college fund. Lotteries are for losers.

Car Leases

Nothing says, ?Please, sir, take my money. A bunch of it!? quite like a car lease. Statistically, leasing is the most expensive way to drive a car. But, according to CNW Marketing Research, nearly one in five people lease their cars. The National Auto Dealers Association says car companies make more money off leasing you a car than if you bought a car with cash. Don?t fall victim to the ?fleece.?

How to Avoid: Save cash and buy a used car.

Timeshares

If you get a timeshare, we hope you really like it?because you?re never going to be able to sell it for anywhere near what you paid for it. You can hardly give the things away. You have no equity and ridiculous maintenance fees?all for the opportunity to visit a place, with minimal square footage, maybe once or twice a year. Why would you ever want to put your hard-earned money into something like that?

How to Avoid: Stay away from the sales pitches and rent instead.

Payday Loans

Do you smell that? It?s the scent of liberally applied hair gel. That can only mean one thing: a greasy payday lender has set up shop nearby. Run! That is, unless you?re into paying hundreds of percent interest. These guys are bottom feeders who prey on poor people. Stay away.

How to Avoid: Take Dave?s advice and just keep driving right past their buildings.

Retirement Loans

Living comfortably after 65 is just so overrated. Wouldn?t you much rather take loans out of your 401(k) today and pay ridiculous tax rates, rather than having a nice nest egg saved up for later? Just think: When you?re 70 and broke, you can move in with your adult children! How much fun does that sound?

How to Avoid: Short of avoiding bankruptcy, never, ever, ever dip into your 401(k). Just pretend like that money doesn?t even exist until you are 65.

30-Year Mortgages

One word: interest. Take a look at these numbers. Interest rates are currently hovering around 4%. With that rate, you would pay about $161,000 in interest on a 30-year mortgage of $225,000. For a 15-year mortgage at 4%, you would pay $74,000 in interest. That?s an $87,000 difference. Think of what you could do with $87,000! Pay for your kid?s college? Help fund your retirement? Maybe even buy another house? A 15-year fixed-rate mortgage is always the way to go.

How to Avoid: Get a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage with a monthly payment no more than 25% of your take-home pay.

If you think you?re on the verge of paying a stupid tax, take a deep breath, sit down, pick up the phone, and call The Dave Ramsey Show or talk to one of our Endorsed Local Providers. They will set you straight. And, better yet, you?ll save a lot of money and a lot of stress in the long run.

What are some stupid taxes that you have paid?

TEST DRIVE: The 2012 Volvo S60 Is The Perfect Luxury Alternative

Volvo S60 CarVolvo has long been a brand that is known for safety. While other luxury brands have dominated sales with their reputations for refinement and class, Volvo seemed happy to soldier on as the alternative choice for the quirky buyer.

In 2011, Volvo gave the S60 some sexy new clothes to make it contend on looks and features. With leather, 18-inch alloy wheels, a redesigned interior, new exterior lines, and a number of safety acronyms, the S60 has made a noticeable splash in the luxury sedan market.

“Less is more” is a mantra that radiates through the S60's styling. All of the Volvo safety is still there.  The City Safety feature helps stop the vehicle, even if you don’t. BLIS helps to warn of blind spot intruders and there is lane drift detection and a number of other features.

The new lines are reminiscent of the old ones, but look better; like a well done face lift. Volvo’s all-wheel drive system was put to the test along with its heated seats, rear fog lamp, and dynamic stability & traction control during the monsoon-like weather conditions of our test drive.

2012 Volvo S60 T6 AWD
Base Price: $31,300
As Driven: $41,270
Engine: 3.0L 6-cylinder, 300 hp
Transmission: 6 Speed Shiftable Automatic
Curb Weight: 3,812 lbs.
Wheelbase: 109.3 in.
MPG Rating: 18 city/ 26 highway

This post originally appeared on Every Man's Auto.

Looks.

The S60 is a blend of squared off lines and curves, which includes every shape ever conceived. The overall shape of the S60 hasn’t changed that much. The square lines from around the taillights on the old models have been smoothed out and given that modern-retro feel. The front end is swept back adding to the “moving even though it’s stopped” design.

Our favorite part of the redesigned exterior is the high arching taillights. They start wide and arch up to emphasize V-O-L-V-O spelled out on the trunk.

There are no forward facing fog lights and that kind of surprises us on a vehicle that has so many safety features.

Compared to other sedans in its class, the S60 is a unique looking vehicle. It will stand out from the very Germanic crowd you normally see at work. This is something to think about before you park something new in the executive lot.

Interior

The interior of the S60 is utilitarian. There is a spattering of wood surrounding the climate control and near the window controls on the doors. The design is clean, but isn’t as refined as other import sedans.

The speedometer and tachometer each have an information center inside them. The gauges are easy to read and the information centers are easy to navigate. In a short time we were able to find the mpg meter and reset it. It took at least twenty minutes to find the same meter on the Mini Coupe.

One gripe is how old the digital info center feels. The graphics are dated, and not in the good way where you feel nostalgic and warm. They are the NES graphics compared to other manufacturers’ Xbox 360’s. They were easy to read, but the pixels were blockier than we would have liked.

Even though it is a smaller luxury car, the rear seat legroom is underwhelming. Last week’s Ford Focus had 33.2 inches of space in the back and the S60 has only 33.5 inches. If your rear occupants are going to be less than five feet tall for the next three to five years, then the legroom is a moot point.

There is a button near the gearshift that allows us to fold the rear headrests forward to improve rear visibility. Annoying teenagers in the back will learn quickly to not lip off to their parents. To teens it will appear that their parents are slapping them in the back of the head with their minds!

Driving

This is where the S60 becomes noticeable. The turbo-charged six cylinder engine turns out 300 horsepower. The turbo kicks in around 2,500 rpms helping the AWD to jump off the line. The S60 has an excellent thrust to weight ratio, so that all 300 hp feels like you are sitting on a mountain of power. The 0 to 60 time is listed at 5.9 seconds, which is a very respectable time.

Coupled with the all-wheel drive system, the engine was able to hurl this Volvo around every corner we encountered. It was impressive compared to any car in the class. Most AWD systems tend to bunch and lurch as the steering wheel is turned to the extreme. The S60’s turning radius is tight and there was no shimmy or lurch from the steering. The system is actually FWD 95% of the time and then when needed it adds in the 5% of rear wheels.

Our day with the S60 was overshadowed by unlikely February thunderstorms. There was no wheel spin and we only felt the computers step in twice to help control the vehicle. Standard on all S60 models is Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC). This keeps the S60 on the road. If your speed and the tightness of the corner don’t match up, the DSTC will apply the brakes correctly to keep the shiny side up. There are always extreme situations that the system can’t anticipate, but if you’re driving that aggressively the DSTC should be off.

We averaged 22.6 mpg on our trip with the S60. The expected highway mpg of 26 has to be firm to make the S60 a good financial decision. If that number dips one or two MPGs, then the S60 is not worth the buy in price. One saving grace is that the S60 uses regular unleaded fuel.

Doing some very simple and probably wrong calculations the regular unleaded will save you around $8 a tank. That’s a burrito per tank. We really like, nay, love burritos.

Got a nosebleed from clinging to the rocket growth in smartphone sales? Investors might want to get ready for a soft landing.

Research firm IDC on Monday released figures on worldwide smartphone shipments, which showed that the market grew 61.3% to 491.4 million units year over year. Looks good, right? No problem there.

But compare that with the rock-star year-over-year growth rate of 75.7% in 2010, and you start to get the picture. Our baby's growing up. This sector is maturing.

And when 2012 comes to a close, IDC analysts expect that growth to further slow.

"The market is maturing, and we can expect smaller volumes" of shipments, says IDC analyst Ramon Llamas, who's still crunching the numbers to figure out how much smaller that growth will be.

Is the sky falling?
Keep in mind, though, that the market is still growing. IDC still expects double-digit growth for the foreseeable future. Of all the mobile-phone shipments last year, smartphones accounted for only 32%, Llamas says. However, that figure was up from 22% the previous year.

So with continued room for growth -- just not quite as much as before -- who has the best star to latch onto? Take a peek at IDC's chart on worldwide smartphone shipment volumes for the fourth quarter of 2011 and the year-ago comparisons.

While Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) was the clear loser in the fourth quarter, as Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Android phones continued to deliver a one-two punch to the struggling handset maker, Llamas says Nokia is getting a lift from its partnership with Microsoft and its revamped Windows Phone operating system.

Apparently, app developers are taking note. At the end of 2010, there were roughly 2,000 Windows Phone apps, Llamas says. In 2011, that figure rose to 30,000. And last month, it reached around 50,000. Apparently the lovefest around Nokia's first Windows phones, the Lumia 800 and 710, helped pump up the numbers.

"This star is taking off," Llamas says.

However, for the year, Nokia saw its smartphone position slip from No. 1 in 2010, when its market share stood at 32.9%, to No. 3 last year, with a 15.7% slice of the market.

iPhone and Android duke it out
Buoyed by the popularity of Android, Samsung shot to the No. 1 spot among smartphone vendors last year, holding 19.1% of the market share based on units shipped. That's a Cinderella story for Samsung, which ranked No. 4 in smartphone shipments in 2010, with 7.5% of the market.

This hasn't been lost on Apple, which has a slew of patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung's Android-based Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

Apple, meanwhile, is gaining traction. While it lost out to Samsung by a whisper, with 19% of the worldwide smartphone market last year, it grabbed the No. 1 spot in the fourth quarter. The iPhone maker scored 23.5% of the market share in the fourth quarter, compared with Samsung's 22.8%.

And the strong performance of Apple's iPhone 4S played a substantial role in juicing up the company's financial results, leading to a blowout quarter.

Foolish takeaway
Although it's easy to get swept up in the individual performance of each of the smartphone players, it pays to keep an eye on the overall industry performance and where it's headed. Got tissues to clean up that nosebleed?

Learn more about three companies that are cashing in on the smartphone market in our free Motley Fool report called "3 Hidden Winners of the iPhone, iPad, and Android Revolution." Two of the companies are tight with Apple, and the third company is key to delivering the Android platform to the marketplace.

How The iPad Kicks Kindle's Butt When It Comes To Ad Traffic (AAPL, AMZN)

kindle ipad

Amazon just kicked off a new TV campaign for the Kindle Fire, which it doubtless hopes will further dent sales of Apple's iPad. But Kindle has a long way to go before it starts threatening the iPad as a device for serving online ads to consumers.

Data from Rimm-Kaufmann Group, an online marketing agency, show that the iPad maintains its total dominance of the tablet market when it comes to ad traffic. Kindle is slowly making progress, but it only has 3.48 percent of the market to iPad's 88.1 percent.

iPad had a 93.44 percent share of the market late last year, so share is being traded quickly in this category.

With iPad 3 on the way, even those small gains for Kindle may be in jeopardy.

When it comes to ad performance, the iPad also has a significant edge. If you index the data to the average ad displayed on a desktop computer, ads on iPad get 10 percent more revenue per click, the same level of overall clicks, and a greater average order value.

All the other tablets, including Kindle, perform much worse than ads displayed on PCs.

iPad dominates ad traffic on tablets, but its dominance is slipping.

The Kindle is gaining share of ad traffic the fastest against the iPad.

But the iPad is still the most effective tablet device by far, for advertisers.
