PHOTOS: Snow Caused Havoc In The English Premier League Today

Soccer Snow

England was bombarded by snow today, and in a couple of Premier League matches, the weather appeared to cause a bit of chaos.

The snow wasn't nearly as bad as that seen in Italy earlier this week. But at one point in the second half of the Manchester City-Fulham match, the game had to be delayed for snow removal.

On the close-ups, you could really see how much snow was coming down

And it was thick

Near the end of the first half, you could see that it was starting to accumulate

The Soviets Had Big Plans For This Enormous Nuclear Equipped Ekranoplane

Ekranoplane

In the thick of the Cold War, the Soviet Union built an immense vessel to carry their troops across the seas and into Western Europe.

Equipped with nuclear warheads and able to blast across the sea at 340 mph, the Lun-class Ekranoplane; part plane, part boat, and part hovercraft — is a Ground Effect Vehicle (GEV).

A GEV takes advantage of an aeronautical effect that allows it to lift off with an immense amount of weight, but limits its flight to 16 feet above the waves. Its altitude can never be greater than the length of the wings.

Think of a large seabird, like a pelican, cruising inches from the water and not needing to flap its wings.

The only complete Ekranoplane now sits on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

While there is talk of refitting the Lun-class and getting the GEV back in the fleet, it's now rusting away, and was spotted by aviation blogger Igor113 who posted these pictures to his blog.

The Lun-class Ekranoplane was used by the Soviet Navy from 1987 to the late 1990s

Nearly 243 feet long, almost as big as the Spruce Goose, the Lun is a ground effect aircraft that can only fly near the surface of the sea

Eight turbofans producing 28,600 pounds of thrust apiece are mounted at the nose of the aircraft

1 Reason the Dow Set New Records Today

Don't let it get away!

Keep track of the stocks that matter to you.

Help yourself with the Fool's FREE and easy new watchlist service today.

It's official, folks: The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEX: ^DJI  ) skated by previous records to close at multiyear highs today. The index, comprised of 30 blue-chip stocks, closed at 12,862 for the day, eclipsing the high-water mark set in May 2008.

But the Dow wasn't alone -- the Nasdaq broke into territory not seen since the end of 2000.

The breakdown
An amazing 28 of the Dow's 30 components rode the wave of enthusiasm to close higher today, with 19 of them gaining 1% or more. You'd think with the tech-heavy Nasdaq hitting decade-plus highs that it'd be tech companies fueling all the enthusiasm today, but actually it was consumer goods and financials.

Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) set the bar with a 5.2% run for the day. This just further distances them from their fellow Dow components and entrenches them as the top-performing Dow stock of 2012 so far. Of course, all those gains don't come risk-free: On the way to an incredible 41% YTD gain, the stock has wildly swung, with 3% gains and losses in each day.

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) crushed fellow index components when it closed 3.3% higher for the day. The big news out of the industrials manufacturer today included the closure of a Canadian plant in a lockout dispute. A month into the dispute, Caterpillar decided to close the 670-person plant. This comes after the plant's workers agreed to cut wages in half, which would have greatly affected pension and wage expenses.

The big news
Utimately the news moving the market today was bigger than any one company. The unemployment level got hammered down to 8.3% today as the economy added a reported 243,000 jobs in January.

This greatly impacts cyclical companies like materials producer Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) and energy company Chevron (NYSE: CVW  ) . No surprise, then, that Alcoa was the third-biggest Dow winner today, closing 3.3% higher for the day. Chevron also had a great run, putting up a 1.8% gain for the day.

Why Your 2012 Tax Bill May Jump By $8,000

AMT taxFrom Mitt Romney to Warren Buffett, people are clamoring for fairer taxes. But thanks to yet another lapse by our lawmakers in Washington, more than 20 million taxpayers may pay a tax that was originally designed to hit only the ultra-rich -- and the increase could cost you as much as $8,000.

When it was first designed, the alternative minimum tax, or AMT, was meant to make taxes more fair. The idea behind the AMT was to make sure that rich people didn't use deductions to zero out their taxes every year.

Because of inflation, though, the AMT threatens to snare more taxpayers every year. So far, Congress has always acted to pass a "patch" to keep those additional millions of taxpayers from having to pay AMT.

In this election year, though, getting any tax law through the House and Senate will be tough. And If lawmakers don't act, the Congressional Budget Office says that the average tax increase will be $3,900, with some paying more than $8,000 extra.

The worst part of not knowing whether you'll have to pay AMT in 2012 is that if you don't have enough tax withheld from your paycheck, you could end up owing interest and penalties.

What to Do

To be safe, you should consider either raising your withholding or planning to make estimated tax payments, which are due starting in April.

But you do have at least some control over whether and how much AMT you owe. Although the AMT is complicated and involves a host of calculations, the big item that hits most people who pay AMT is state and local tax, whether it's state income tax or the property taxes you pay on your home. Usually, you can deduct those tax payments, but the AMT doesn't allow it.

So if you're in a high-tax state and an AMT patch doesn't come soon, start thinking about whether you can spread those taxes out, paying some in 2012 and some in 2013. If you can, it could help keep you from wasting a potential deduction and getting stuck with the AMT.

Beware The Long (Global) Arm Of The IRS

In an attempt to balance the budget and close the tax gap, Congress, the Obama administration and the IRS are on a mission to intimidate Americans into reporting all of their income, onshore and offshore.
