A Day in the Life of EntreLeadership Master Series

You could feel it in the air. The excitement was palpable. Recently in San Antonio, Texas, lives were being changed. Businesses were mending and leaders were taking the first steps in creating cultures that will take their companies to heights they?ve never imagined. Welcome to EntreLeadership Master Series.

On day two, the topic on everyone?s mind was hiring. Dave took the attendees through his process early in the morning. The event continued with a panel of his leaders, including Debbie LoCurto, vice president, Financial Peace University Church Department, Matt Woodburn, chief operating officer, Bill Hampton, executive vice president, plus Dave, sitting down to answer any questions in a no-holds-barred session. Here?s a sampling of some of the inquiries and the solutions offered.

Q: How do I inspire employees who are not getting the job done? I usually tell them once or twice to get their act together. If they don?t, I get ticked off and fire them. How can I avoid this and start building a company where people want to do their best work?

Debbie: I would have everyone write down what they do every week. That?s your starting point. Then, sit down with each of them and discuss what they have written. After the meeting, create key results areas for each position. Most corporations would call these job descriptions. But it?s much more. It?s defining in detail what winning in that position looks like. A job description gets you hired. The key results area moves your company forward. This is what you need to execute week in and week out.

Bill: One thing we?ve learned is that sometimes what the person thinks they are supposed to be doing and what you are expecting are totally different. When they write it out, it will help you clarify each position. You can then say, ?Hey, that?s exactly what they are supposed to be doing,? or ?Oh man, we?re way off.?

Matt: Once you get that put together, you hopefully have a meeting of the minds. To make sure everybody stays on the same page, require your team to turn in weekly reports. A lot of elements that go into that weekly report are going to come from their key results areas. It?s going to give you a one- to two-page quick glance what that team member accomplished for the week for you, and if they are staying on track.

Q: I have a hard time finding qualified candidates to join our team. How can I generate a bigger pool?

Matt: We are experiencing something similar in our company. It?s been very hard to find technical hires for web development, programming, etc. We are experimenting with some recruiting companies that will actually go out and target people of these specific talents. We are also creating a branding campaign that will go out to all kinds of potential candidates. It tells them what a great place we are to work for. We want them to think of us like they think of Google or Amazon for some super-tech programming jobs.

Find out where the talent you are trying to attract gather. Do they have a convention? Can you set up a booth there? You need to somehow get your name out to them.

Dave: You need to put a bounty on the position. Pay your team for referrals. And then, get your team jacked up about it. Try to do some blogging and get some awards for being the best place in the world to work?your culture, integrity, who you are, the pay. Build up your reputation. Then it becomes a privilege for someone to work there.

We?ve won ?Best Place to Work in Nashville? five times in a row. Everybody is yakking about us. It creates a buzz out there, and that is what you want.

Q: I?m ready to hire my first team member. You always recommend multiple, multiple interviews, but at what point does the candidate think I?m crazy? Do I need to put on a fake mustache?

Bill: All your interviews don?t have to be that formal. Maybe the first time, you have coffee with the guy. It?s brief. Then you get together in a more formal interview. After that, go tee it up or just hang out. Then, meet with the guy and his spouse. You learn so much more just hanging out than in a specific interview. Very quickly, you can decide whether he has the skills for the job or not. That?s the easy one. It?s the other factors. It?s his integrity. It?s his character. It?s his personality.

You need to tell him that it?s going to take numerous interviews on the front end, though, so he doesn?t think you are a crazy freak. Say something like, ?We are going to take all this time because we care about you, and we care about your family. I would much rather figure out now that you are the wrong person for the position then figure it out a month after you got here. So I apologize for the time we take in this interview process.?

At the end of day, I care about them. And I want to find out before the process starts whether they are right or wrong. They?ll thank you for it later.

Dave: I would recommend just claiming up front what you are doing: ?This matters so much to me that we are just going to take some time. It?s going to seem a little weird. What I really want to do is let you get to know me to see if you want to work on this team. I want to get to know you too. We?re just going to talk a long time four or five times in different settings and get to know each other.?

How to Get the Best Deal on Car Insurance for Your Kid

Car insuranceIf a car tops your teen's holiday gift wish-list, give as much consideration to insurance as you do the car's make and model and the debate over whether to buy new or used.

And brace yourself for insurance premium sticker shock.

Young drivers keep insurers up at night, and you'll pay the price once your prince or princess gets behind the wheel. The accident rate for drivers ages 16 to 19 is higher than for any other driver age group. Sixteen-year-olds top the list, with an accident rate 3.7 times higher than drivers of all ages, and 1.8 times higher for accidents involving alcohol. The majority of citations given to teens -- 52 percent -- are for speeding, according to Tasha Lockyer, auto insurance editor for NextAdvisor.com, an independent consumer information site.

Car sales are expected to be healthy this month and into the first quarter of next year as prices decline from summer highs, says Lacey Plache, chief economist for car site Edmunds.com. So if you also want to get a deal on car insurance for your child, here's what you need to know.

Consider What Counts

When it comes to what makes up the price of your premium, a few factors come into play, such as the type of car being insured, the age and driving record of the person being insured, and the amount of coverage in the policy, notes Phil Reed, senior consumer advice editor at Edmunds.com.

Where and how often you drive also count. Urban areas are usually more expensive than suburban ones, due to higher rates of vandalism, theft, and accidents. If you live in a city, expect to pay more. The more you drive, the more you can expect to pay. "If your teen is just going to be driving to school and back, make sure you include that information in your quote," says Lockyer.

Speak Up

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Ask for discounts. For example, full time students can cost a little less to insure because many companies offer "good student" discounts (usually requiring a B average or 3.0 GPA), typically between 10-15%. "The discount is significant. Explain it to your teenager and offer to split the savings if they hold up their end of the bargain by meeting the GPA required by your insurance company," says Reed.


Then too, if you've been a loyal customer with few or no claims over a long period of time, you might be able to use that as leverage in getting a better rate.

According to editors at shopautoweek.com, if you insure your child on your policy, you might be able to get the insurance company to assign the least expensive car in your house to that teen. Then make sure that's the only car that your teen drives.

Pick Your Car Wisely

You can go back and forth for days about buying new or used. When you're shopping for a car, decide what type you'll be buying, then call your insurance company and ask about the differences in the premium between new and used, and among various makes and models. You can save a good amount of money by choosing a car with a lower premium, says Lockyer. SUVs and high performance cars in particular can be more expensive to insure.

Consider too that discounts are sometimes given for particular safety features and theft prevention items like auto alarms. You also might benefit by agreeing to install a tracking device that monitors your child's driving.

Read Them the Riot Act

As the holidays are a celebratory season, have a serious talk with your teen about the responsibility involved in driving safely and wisely. The majority of teen driver fatal car crashes occur between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. "Consider limiting your teen's driving after 9 p.m.," says Lockyer.

It might help your rates, as well as your peace of mind, to sign your teen up for a "safe driver" program.

Know the Laws

Many states have graduated driver's license laws. In general, this means that young drivers can only drive with a licensed adult for the first 6 to 12 months of being licensed. Many of these laws exclude driving at night and limit the number of passengers, and/or underage passengers, a teen driver can have in the car. "Be aware of the laws in your state," advises Brian Moody, lead editor for the car marketplace site, AutoTrader.com.

Once you have the insurance figured out, then there's that other matter -- making peace with the thought of your baby on the road.

Savage Rivale: The Most Amazing Car You've Never Heard Of


Savage Rivale

Savage Rivale is an ambitious startup based in the Netherlands and working hard on not just a new car, but a whole new segment.

That segment, albeit a niche one, is the four-door convertible supercar segment, a void which in the very new future will be filled by the striking Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS.

Still in the concept phase, but edging invariably closer to production, the Roadyacht GTS is featured in a stunning new promotional video filmed where else but in the home of the car’s target market, the millionaires’ playground that is Monaco.  

Savage Rivale has confirmed that the production version of the Roadyacht GTS will debut in 2012 at a major auto show in the Middle East, another key region where the Dutch firm hopes to sell its wares. For now Savage Rivale is continuing work on the Roadyacht GTS’ convertible roof system but order books for the car are already open, with three customers having placed firm orders thus far.

One of these orders is for a special version, the track-only ‘GTR’. It will come with a stripped out body, more powerful drivetrain, and plenty of carbon fiber to keep weight down. Savage Rivale has also revealed that it plans to build just 69 GTR models and the first one will be shown to customers as early as February.

As for the road-going Roadyacht GTS, Savage Rivale plans to start deliveries in early 2013. As previously reported, the car will ride on an in-house developed chrome molybdenum frame and in standard trim will run the high-performance 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 engine from the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 but tuned to produce 601 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.

Importantly, Savage Rivale will also use its uniquely-designed car in an attempt to set a new Nurburgring-Nordschleife record for a four-door car. That attempt will take place sometime next year.
