Ron Paul Slams Trump, Joins Huntsman In Sitting Out 'Circus-Like' Debate

Donald Trump, Ron Paul

Ron Paul will join Jon Huntsman in boycotting the Dec. 27 Newsmax Republican presidential debate featuring Donald Trump as a moderator, saying in a statement that the reality television star's participation is "beneath the office of the Presidency."

Paul also took issue with Trump's last minute cancellation of an appearance at the Republican Party of Iowa's Lincoln Day Dinner last spring, forcing the cancellation of the entire event.

A Huntsman spokesman said on Friday that "We look forward to watching Mitt and Newt suck-up to The Donald with a big bowl of popcorn."

GOP front-runner Newt Gingrich accepted an invitation to the debate on Saturday, his spokesman R.C. Hammond tweeted. POLITICO's Maggie Haberman captured Gingrich's own explanation for participating in the debate:

"How could you turn down The Donald? I would want to go just for the entertainment value," he added, noting he's meeting with Trump on Monday in Manhattan. But he quickly added, "Trump is a unique American character...it'd be like if Bill Gates called (asking for a debate presence)."

Here's the statement from the Paul campaign rejecting the invitation:

“The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential Campaign Committee rejects the selection of Donald Trump as moderator for the Republican presidential debate to be held on December 27th in Iowa.

“We have conferred with our Iowa campaign chairman Drew Ivers and vice-chairmen David Fischer and A.J. Spiker who are all RPI State Central Committee Members, and they concur with this decision.

“The selection of a reality television personality to host a presidential debate that voters nationwide will be watching is beneath the office of the Presidency and flies in the face of that office’s history and dignity.  Mr. Trump’s participation as moderator will distract from questions and answers concerning important issues such as the national economy, crushing federal government debt, the role of the federal government, foreign policy, and the like.  To be sure, Mr. Trump’s participation will contribute to an unwanted circus-like atmosphere.

“Mr. Trump’s selection is also wildly inappropriate because of his record of toying with the serious decision of whether to compete for our nation’s highest office, a decision he appeared to make frivolously.  The short-lived elevation of Mr. Trump’s stature as a candidate put him on the radar of many organizations and we recall that last spring he was invited to keynote the Republican Party of Iowa’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner, yet at the last minute he left RPI holding the bag by canceling.  In turn, RPI canceled its biggest fundraising gala of the year and suffered embarrassment and in addition RPI was required to engage in refunding measures.  Our candidate will not even consider participating in the late-December debate until Mr. Trump publicly apologizes to Iowa party leaders and rectifies in full the situation.

“Therefore our candidate Ron Paul, the champion of the Constitution, has advised he will not attend.”

Would You Watch an Ad Instead of Paying an ATM Fee?

What if there was a simpler solution to avoiding an ATM fee than running all over town looking for an in-network machine? One Brooklyn, New York-based entrepreneur says he found it.

Instead of paying a fee to use an out-of-network ATM fee, Clinton Townsend, the founder of Free ATMs NYC, proposes consumers watch an ad, the New York Daily News reports. Townsend has already installed one of the free ATMs at a New York City music venue.

Townsend's business plan may be coming at just the right time. Americans spent $7.1 billion in ATM fees in 2010, according to Oliver Wyman, a consulting firm. JPMorgan Chase abandoned a test program where the bank charged non-Chase customers in a few states $4 or $5 to use the banks ATMs after just two months, according to CNNMoney.

The bank went back to charging its usual $3 fee for out of network customers after determining that the higher fees weren't generating enough revenue to justify expanding the program nationwide. Still, the $3 fee is higher than the average charge in the cities with the highest ATM fees, according to bankrate.com.

But Chase's decision to just lower its ATM fee likely won't satisfy consumers. Seventy-Seven percent of respondents to a November Ally Bank survey said that they don't think it's okay for a bank to charge an ATM fee.

Consumers aren't the only ones complaining about high ATM fees. ATM operators filed a lawsuit against Visa and Mastercard in October, alleging that the credit card companies' rules prevent the operators from offering their services at a lower price.

Banks have been quietly boosting fees in recent months in an effort to recoup revenue lost due to new limits on swipe fees, overdraft fees and other charges that took effect as part of the Dodd-Frank financial regulations.

Bank of America announced in September that it would charge customers $5 to use their their debit card for purchases starting in 2012. But the bank and others ultimately abandoned plans to charge for debit card use after criticism came pouring in.

Here are the cities with the highest ATM fees:

WATCH: Top-Ranked Kentucky Beats UNC With A Blocked Shot In Final Seconds

Top-ranked Kentucky held off fifth-ranked North Carolina with a blocked shot by freshman Anthony Davis in the final seconds.

After Kentucky missed a free throw with 20 seconds remaining, UNC worked the ball up court. A misplayed ball in the paint wound up in the hands of John Henson. He tried the game-winner from about ten feet away with about six seconds on the clock. But Davis rose to the occasion, blocked the shot and sent Kentucky home the winners.

These Lenders Are Putting Foreclosures On Hold For The Holidays

Foreclosure Moving Family Crib Empty Room Home

Fannie Mae, Freddie Macand several large mortgage lenders have announced that they will not foreclose on delinquent borrowers during the Christmas season.

The mortgage servicers said they are taking this step to help struggling homeowners rest assured that they won’t have to think about facing a stressful foreclosure for at least a few more weeks.

Foreclosure Moratorium Applied to Delinquent Mortgage Loans

Homeowners who currently carry loans serviced through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will have a break from the worry of being evicted from their homes–at least for a few weeks.

Terry Edwards, an executive vice president for Fannie Mae, explained that “No family should have to give up their home during this holiday season.”

To ensure no homeowners are removed from their homes, the mortgage giants plan to halt the eviction procedures by instating a foreclosure moratorium  from Dec. 19 to Jan. 2.

Some banks that offer mortgage loans also said they will stop the eviction process during a similar timeframe. Both Chase Mortgage and Wells Fargo said they will not evict anyone between Dec. 22 and Jan. 2.

Bank of America said it would “avoid foreclosure sales or displacement of homeowners or tenants around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.”

Fannie Mae and Others Continue Legal and Administrative Evictions Proceedings

While lenders plan to halt evictions for a few weeks, most said they will continue some aspect of the process during this period. Fannie Mae explained that legal and administrative proceedings for evictions will likely continue, but families will still be allowed to remain in their homes.

Wells Fargo also said it will not shut down its eviction machinery entirely. It will observe the foreclosure moratorium on foreclosed properties in its own portfolio, but said “foreclosure-related actions may still occur” for loans it services for other lenders.

Despite ongoing proceedings, the stop on evictions is expected to impact tens of thousands of homeowners, since the average number of scheduled foreclosures with evictions to follow is around 89,000 in one month, according to RealtyTrac.

The halt could particularly help homeowners who, during the moratorium, are able to come up with money to get current on their mortgage.
