Verbs for iPad is the best looking chat client

Verbs was already one of our favorite chat clients for iPhone, and now it's on iPad.

While Verbs doesn't boast a ton of features, it does a great job hooking up to Google Talk, AIM, and Facebook Chat, and presents it all in a beautiful simplified manner.

Verbs doesn't include Push Notifications by default, but if you get the $4.99 in-app purchase, you can stay online for up to ten days at a time and get pushed messages. This is still cheaper than BeeJiveIM.

Yes, People Really Want Microsoft Windows Running Their Tablets

A survey by the Boston Consulting Group reveals that a majority of consumers would prefer to use the Windows OS on their tablets instead of Apple's iOS or Google's Android, which implies that once released, there could be huge upside for Microsoft in tablets. Windows is one of Microsoft's most important revenue driver and accounts for more than 25% of the $28 Trefis price estimate for Microsoft, which stands around 5% above the current market price

Financial Wisdom in a Struggling Economy

[WizardRSS: unable to retrieve full-text content]

Our economy is struggling right now and you don't have to be the Chairman of the Federal Reserve to notice. We've got all the symptoms and we face them every day. They are: high gas prices, increased foreclosures, higher pricing on basic goods and services, and increased airfare costs. Elected officials bicker and fight over who to blame for all of this and while they do, we are left to try and pick up the pieces. What can we do about the economy? Can we really do anything to have a positive impact on our economy?...

This Chart Will Make Bill Gross Sick To His Stomach

We've been talking over the last few days about Bill Gross' big about-face. He's now betting heavy on interest rates going much lower.

Anyway, we ran it here, but this chart from Scott Barber at Reuters shows 10-year yields vs. the Citigroup Economic Surprise Index (a measure of whether the economic data is beating expectations), which has shot up massively.

If history is any guide, yields should be shooting up too to play catch up.

Will Shoppers Buy Into Gap's Merchandise Makeover?

Gap executives this week set plans to turnaround its ailing namesake stores, which include jazzing up its concededly drab clothing mix with more colorful items and prints, as it cuts 21% of its U.S. store base to focus on expansion overseas.

Product changes at Gap stores will bloom in the spring, with more "color, emotion and clear product points of view," while staying true to its "casual, American optimistic" style, the company said, in a press statement.

But is that what shoppers want from the iconic brand that helped define casual dressing in the U.S.?

A random sample of consumers across the nation cited the brand's classic, understated looks as the reason they shop the chain. They worried that the merchandise makeover might result in trendy fare that displaces the Gap's signature clean styling.

Madeline Pietschnig, 18, said she shops the Gap for its "simple, modern styling that's not too flashy," preferring the outlet stores to the full line stores since they're less pricey.

While Pietschnig likes Gap's plan to add more colorful clothing to the mix, she'd like the changes to end there. "I hope they don't become one of those sell out stores, with the animal prints and flashy rhinestones on clothing, like Forever 21," she says.

Pietschnig might be in for a disappointment.

The retailer has introduced to its stores skinny jean leggings with animal and snake prints, which have been a hit, Art Peck, president of Gap North America, told Reuters during a store tour.

It's precisely those young, hipster looks geared toward a model's proportions that have turned off Paulette Stout, 43, a grant writer from Acton, Massachusetts.

"They went for that teenybopper look, they went heroin chic," she said, noting the rail thin, androgynous look popularized by runway models in the 90s.

Gap went "overboard" with items like skinny leg jeans. "Not everyone is going to wear a size zero," she says. "When you create a line like that, you're telling a lot of people, 'I don't want you to shop in my store.' I used to shop there all the time, but they pushed me away."

Amy Gifford, 52, still manages to find clothes she likes at the Gap.

"For the stuff I'm looking for, I don't find it drab," says the health care professional from Washington D.C. They offer "versatile styles that you can dress up or dress down, and it's good quality."

The longtime Gap devotee recently purchased t-shirts, and what has become a favorite, smokey gray wool cardigan in a classic cut she couldn't find anywhere else.

While it remains to be seen how Gap will hold on to its classic aesthetic while spicing up the mix, they'll have fewer stores to worry about stateside: The retailer will shutter 189 units by the end of 2013.

Shoppers were surprised that Gap will be closing so many units. "They're really doing that bad?" Pietschnig said.

Ann Fischbach, a retiree from Manhattan who shops the Gap for "sporty" looks and polo shirts, had heard the news about the stores closings and wondered how many would shutter in New York City. Not too many, she hopes.

"Wow," said Gifford, when told about the number of stores set to shutter. "It's sad. They're an American institution."

Carmelo Anthony Clearly Summed Up The State Of The Current NBA Lockout In Two Words: 'It Sucks'

Carmelo AnthonyCarmelo Anthony is back in New York.

Not to play basketball of course. The NBA lockout won’t allow that.

But to promote his latest endorsement: Power Grip. An “innovative liquid chalk technology” to “combat sweaty hands” and “improve grip for athletes.”

He went the Modell’s in Times Square Friday to promote the new product and talk about all things basketball.

Clearly, issues surrounding the NBA lockout took major precedence. But he also took the time to talk about his current team, his college team, and the threat of a basketball-less Christmas.

Here are just some of the New York Knicks’ thoughts:

On if there will be an NBA season:

I hope so. I’m ready for a season. I say it everyday. Sitting back, not playing. That gets frustrating. Oct. 3, I got up thinking I had training camp. This is a true story. I got up, ate some breakfast, thinking I was going to go out to the facility. It dawned on me that we weren’t having no training day, no media day. So it’s a tough situation for everybody. For the NBA. For the players. For the fans out there. For the arenas. For the people who are jobless right now. It’s a tough situation.

On if the players are properly getting their message out:

I don’t think we’re really getting our message out there to be honest with you. The owners are definitely doing a great job of getting their message out there.  They have David Stern and the owners who can talk. We only have Derek Fisher. We have one person going against the whole NBA.

On his message to fans:

I feel your pain. I’m there with you. I want to get a season going ASAP. In the meantime, I understand where they’re coming from. It sucks. Especially coming into a highly anticipated season like this year. The ratings would have been sky high this year. Opening night would have been a wonderful night. Last year was a historical year for the NBA as a whole. We are missing the game of basketball. We want to play basketball and we want the fans to enjoy that as well.

On the possibility of no Christmas games, as Commissioner Stern recently threatened:

It was heartbreaking for me to hear that, too. New York–Boston on Christmas. How can you want to miss that? It’s tough. That’s one game I had marked on my calendar. Any game that we can get at this point in time, I’ll take them. Whether it’s Christmas. Whether it’s New Year’s. Any game we can get, I’ll take them at this point.

On his teammate Amare Stoudemire’s proposal of an alternate league during the lockout:

Amare is serious about that. Can that thought come to life? I’m pretty sure it can. It is possible that a players-only league can happen. But that would take a long time to do unless people just throw money out there and say ‘I’ll be a sponsor.’ But there’s a lot of logistics that goes behind that and a lot of details that goes behind that. If it happens…I’ll be the first person there to play.

On the progress of developing his NYC exhibition game:

I’m working on it. Trying to figure out a date and a location. But there will be one.

On the Knicks improving as a defensive unit:

We just got to do it. Defense is just about effort and consistency. It takes time. But we have a team that can be a great defensive team. And I’ll lead that charge. I’ll take that stance that I am the leader of this team and I will lead this team to where we have to go. We will become a great defensive team.

On Syracuse, his alma mater, eventually moving to the ACC:

When you hear Syracuse basketball the first thing that comes to mind is: “Big East.” It will be kind of tough for long-lasting Big East fans to accept it. But at the end of the day, the ACC will be the most powerful conference out there. And hopefully it’ll help their recruiting and they’ll be one of the top teams. As long as we can get the ACC tournament at the [Madison Square] Garden, I don’t care about the other stuff.
