Here's Everything We Know About Amazon's Secret Tablet So Far (AMZN)

Jeff Bezo <a class=

Jeff Bezos and company are doing a good job keeping the details on Amazon's new tablet, expected later this year, under the tightest of wraps.

There's not much out there about it right now, but the leaks are starting to turn into a trickle, so we've gathered what we can for you here.

Bezos even plays games with the press when they ask him about it.

"Stay tuned," he says.

It will run a special fork of Android, but won't look at all like the Android tablets we've seen so far.

New information from MG Siegler on TechCrunch confirm that it's running Android -- but a special forked version created by Amazon. It won't look anything like other Android tablets, and will have no links to Google services.

It's going to run a bunch of Amazon apps.

According to today's TechCrunch report, the tablet will run all Amazon apps -- the music player is Amazon Cloud Drive, the movie player is the Amazon Instant Video Player, and the app store is the Amazon App Store.

There will be two tablets available -- a smaller one code-named Coyote and a larger one called Hollywood.

The smaller one is coming out this fall. The larger one won't be out until next year.

Apple: Android Actually Started Here (AAPL, GOOG)

android eating apple

Apple says that Andy Rubin may have gotten one of the ideas used in Android from way back when he worked at Apple.

Apple is suing HTC for patent infringement in the International Trade Court, alleging that HTC's Android phones infringe on its patents.

Previously, HTC made an argument that Android founder Andy Rubin started working on mobile platforms in the mid-1990s when he was with General Magic.

Not so, says Apple. In a court filing uncovered by Florian Mueller, Apple says:

Android and Mr. Rubin's relevant background does not start, as HTC would like the Commission to believe, with his work at General Magic or Danger in the mid-1990s. In reality, as the evidence revealed at the hearing, Mr. Rubin began his career at Apple in the early 1990s and worked as a low-level engineer specifically reporting to the inventors of the '263 [realtime API] patent at the exact time their invention was being conceived and developed. [...] It is thus no wonder that the infringing Android platform used the claimed subsystem approach of the '263 patent that allows for flexibility of design and enables the platform to be "highly customizable and expandable" as HTC touts.

So far, Apple hasn't sued Google directly -- it's only gone after Android resellers.

But if Apple sues Google over this patent, Mueller believes it could result in an injunction forcing Google to stop shipping the operating system.

Amazon Promises To Create 7,000 Jobs If California Punts On Web Sales Tax

amazon.com logo

Amazon.com has said it will add 7,000 workers to its payrolls in California, but only if the state agrees to temporarily postpone implementation of a new sales tax on online purchases.

According to Reuters, the web services giant also said that it would stop pushing a ballot measure to overturn that new tax if the state waits until 2014 to being collecting revenue from online purchases. The sales tax went into effect July 1.

News of the offer broke Thursday night, just before the federal government unveiled Friday morning new labor statistics showing that no net jobs had been created in August. Through July, California had the second highest unemployment rate in the nation at 12.0%.

Amazon said they would primarily add new jobs in the company's distribution centers. However, as Reuters noted, Democratic lawmakers are unlikely to go along with the proposal because of the state's revenue woes.

Cybersecurity: The Industry With 0% Unemployment

"I got another job offer! Oh man, what should I do?"

This is not a typical lament among job seekers these days. Yet almost every week I hear it from a friend who is an information security specialist (aka, cybersecurity tech geek).

At just 25 years old, he's armed with numerous certifications that you and I have probably never even heard of. Because of them, employers are desperately trying to recruit him.

There's good reason for his good fortune: Last month, the unemployment rate for information security specialists was reported to be 0%. (Yes, I said zero, as in a very impressive guess-what-you-hope-your-kid-wants-to-study-at-college zero percent.)

Such ironclad job security is even more remarkable when compared with the current national unemployment rate of just over 9%.

So why are these cybercops in such demand?

The Last Four Digits of My SSN Are...

As recently revealed hacks of the U.S. government, the United Nations, and other high-profile organizations remind us, cybersecurity is a necessity. We think little of leaving our credit card information stored with online vendors like Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), or Netflix (NFLX), and we're even more cavalier with our email addresses and contact information. And with the rise of cloud computing, we're being asked to trust not only these companies but also third parties running faraway servers.

The never-ending stream of security breaches reported on the evening news has left consumers wondering whether these companies are capable of properly securing our information. And, more importantly, can consumers trust them to ably handle even more of our sensitive personal data?

The answer to this important question is yes, with a caveat: Companies are capable of protecting our sensitive information only inasmuch as they are able to hire properly trained information security specialists. It's my friend's certifications, not his geek charm, that are his key to success.

Want in on This Surefire Field?

Barring a cybersecurity degree, how can you and I get in on the spoils of this growing field? By investing in companies that train these digital bouncers.

SAIC (SAI), for example, provides state-of-the-art training and certifications to keep the "good guys" one step ahead of the hackers. By producing a reliable force of competent specialists, both internally and externally, SAIC is helping secure the future of this industry.

The industry as a whole is inexpensive right now -- the average P/E is just 13.7. In addition to SAIC (which sports a P/E of 7.7 after a post-earnings sell-off today), ManTech International Corp. (MANT) (P/E: 10) and CACI (CACI) (P/E: 11.5) appear to be affordable investments in this sector.

If you think (as I do) that cybersecurity companies could bring real security to your portfolio, begin your research by adding SAIC, ManTech, and CACI to your list of stocks to watch and keep tabs on the pulse of this industry.

The Most Important Jobs Number For Ben Bernanke

bernanke

Today's jobs report was obviously horrible news, and so with Congress deadlocked, all focus turns to the next Fed meeting.

Will Bernanke and the FOMC pull the trigger on some form of QE3?

On the surface, the new-jobs goose-egg would seem to make that more likely.

But what's really telling are the internals that show disinflation.

Average hourly earnings fell 0.1% sequentially, compared to 0.2% expected and a 0.5% increase last month.

The average work-week shrank to 34.2 hours vs. 34.3.

FOMC members who wanted to see some disinflation before doing more easing are getting their wish.
