The Most Important Jobs Number For Ben Bernanke

bernanke

Today's jobs report was obviously horrible news, and so with Congress deadlocked, all focus turns to the next Fed meeting.

Will Bernanke and the FOMC pull the trigger on some form of QE3?

On the surface, the new-jobs goose-egg would seem to make that more likely.

But what's really telling are the internals that show disinflation.

Average hourly earnings fell 0.1% sequentially, compared to 0.2% expected and a 0.5% increase last month.

The average work-week shrank to 34.2 hours vs. 34.3.

FOMC members who wanted to see some disinflation before doing more easing are getting their wish.

Is Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL  ) about to get cored?

Yesterday, I made the case for why Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN  ) poses a credible threat to Apple and its empire -- if only it can avoid the mistakes that Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) made with the TouchPad. While some Fools have expressed skepticism regarding Amazon's commitment to building a tablet PC, and taking on the Cupertino Colossus ... Amazon seems pretty darn sure of itself.

Amazon's initial move against its rival is expected to come in October, and to take the form of a seven-inch tablet built on contract by Taiwan's Quanta Computer. Already, however, Amazon is planning ahead to ramp up, and launch a full-blown 10.1-inch tablet that will eclipse the iPad -- sizewise at least -- in 2012. Amazon's also apparently enlisting an ally in this battle (or turncoat, depending on your perspective). According to tech sleuth Digitimes, Foxconn Electronics will be tapped to build the 10-inch tablet. As Foxconn is already the builder for both Apple's well-received iPad and Amazon's even more popular Kindle, this could spell trouble for Apple. Foxconn has the chops to make this product a success.

A comp too far?
Granted, some pundits are already criticizing Amazon's move, saying that it could undermine sales of its seven-inch tablet if consumers decide to hold off and buy the bigger version. Already, though, I've begun speaking with potential buyers eager to see the new product, who say they'd actually prefer the smaller, more portable tablet. Then, if Amazon finds a way to offer better daylight visibility, they'll jump on it.

More strategically, I also think Amazon's right to make its commitment to tablet production clear. In beginning plans for mass production of a larger tablet before the first generation has even seen the light of day, Amazon is throwing down a gauntlet. It's telling potential customers and app developers, "Hey, we're not going to pull an HP and run away from Apple, tails tucked. And we're not going to accept a drubbing like Dell (Nasdaq: DELL  ) and Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM  ) , either." Amazon's telling us that even if sales don't take off immediately, it's in this for the long haul, and will do what it takes to get up to scale on this product -- and knock King Apple right off his LCD throne.

How Julian Assange Totally Lost Control Of 250,000 US Diplomatic Cables

julian assange mastercard

This is an updated post with additional content noted below.

Confirming reports that it's lost control of its cache of US diplomatic cables, WikiLeaks on Thursday announced a security breach resulting in the disclosure of hundreds of thousands of unredacted documents.

According to The Wall Street Journal, WikiLeaks quickly accused its former publishing partner, The Guardian, for portions of the leak.

The Guardian responded with a statement Thursday saying, "It's nonsense to suggest the Guardian's WikiLeaks book has compromised security in any way.

Wired reported August 30 that the cache of documents was floating around online for months with the filename "cables.csv".

Wired also pointed out that unlike previous cables that had been censored to protect intelligence agents and informants, the rogue file listed full identities of agents in Israel, Jordan, Iran and Afghanistan.

Regardless of the accusations, it's unknown who hacked the files, but the news comes just days after WikiLeaks rushed to publish more than 100,000 previously unreleased cables.

UPDATE: The German publication Der Spiegel that broke the story of the screw-up earlier this week published a comprehensive account of how the files became compromised -- titled a "Disaster in six acts". Below are the highlights.

  • Assange created a password for the files he lodged on a server. He wrote it on a piece of paper, but to complete the entry the user needed to attach a suffix -- this suffix was given to The Guardian, The New York Times, Spiegel and others.
  • When Daniel Domscheit-Berg was making repairs on the server he pulled a chunk of data that contained the files -- he too had a copy of the word written on the slip of paper and knew how to find the suffix.
  • WikiLeaks supporters tried protecting the files by putting copies of all the data online, compressing it, and sent it out via torrent. The torrent stream decentralized the data making it impossible to fully to retrieve -- they had no idea Assange had left the secure file in the data.
  • Assange and Domscheit-Berg (DB) had a fight, and DB launched OpenLeaks.
  • To show how untrustworthy Assange was, DB began telling people about the hidden cache of unredacted files floating around online and then -- a journalist for Der Freitag got the password.
  • Wednesday WikiLeaks eventually downloaded 550 Megabytes of encrypted data via BitTorrent with the promise of a following password -- no one knows if this is the unredacted cache.
  • WikiLeaks is suing The Guardian and the person who gave the journalist the password.
  • The Guardian insists they were told the password was only temporary and it would be changed.

More details will follow as they arise.

Is Jon Huntsman The New Candidate Of The Conservative Intellectual Elite?

jon huntsman

The Wall Street Journal's editorial board endorsed presidential candidate Jon Huntsman's economic growth plan in a column published in Friday's paper.

The board declared that the plan put forward Wednesday by the former Utah governor and Ambassador to China "is as impressive as any to date in the GOP Presidential field, and certainly better than what we've seen from the front-runners."

Last month the same editorial writers called on fiscal conservatives like Rep. Paul Ryan and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to enter the GOP presidential race — calling the declared candidates a "weak field." But weeks later it seems conservative intellectual class has found its candidate, albeit a longshot one, in Huntsman.

The far-reaching plan would upend the nation's tax code, rein in government regulation and promote free trade agreements.

"Perhaps Mr. Huntsman should be asked to give the Republican response to the President's jobs speech next week," the editorial says. "The two views of what makes an economy grow could not be more different."

While he only polls in the low single-digits, Huntsman said today he will win the New Hampshire primary despite a major campaign shakeup in the first in the nation primary state.

Regardless, his plan — and the positive response it has gotten from fiscal conservatives — is enough to get Mitt Romney worried. The former Massachusetts governor will announce his own plan on Tuesday, and he is under pressure to cater it to appeal to the tea party. Such a move would weakening his position in the eyes of the so-called "conservative intelligentsia," who haven't found a candidate to get behind — until now.

Your Partner's Sleep Habits Can Influence Yours For The Better

sleep couple

I had a plan. I really did.

Convinced that my girlfriend got sub-par sleep, I was going to have her use Zeo for a month, show her just how bad her sleep was, then write about it for you all to read.

Although it may not seem like I’m Boyfriend of the Year, I am a great sleeper. Didn’t think that my girlfriend could say the same about herself.

Turns out I was wrong.

Perception vs Reality – Not always a Pretty Thing

I was expecting her to have a decent ZQ, but something on the lower end of her age range.  Not horrible sleep, but certainly less – and of a lower  quality- than what she could get.

She ended up with an average of 96. My own average is a 97. I was blown away.

How could this have happened, I asked myself. Did I wake up in Opposite land?

No.

The truth of the matter is that she is actually a pretty good sleeper.  Her secret weapon?

It’s me!

Your Bed Partner is Your Secret Sleep Weapon

Social scientists have noticed that one partner’s behavior can influence the other – and it looks like this was a classic example of good habits rubbing off.

My girlfriend and I have been living together for almost six months. During that time, she’s adapted to my sleeping schedule and now goes to bed and wakes up at roughly the same times as I do. Keeping a set bedtime and risetime — even on the weekends— is a hallmark of good sleep hygiene and good sleep.

Now that she’s turning in at about the same time I am – instead of staying up much later and cutting into her total sleep time – she gets way better sleep now than before.

Our bedroom is also much more attuned to sleeping.  My girlfriend now benefits from blackout curtains – to cut down on wake-ups due to light – as well as a fan to help drown out any noise.  No doubt that’s also contributed to her good sleep, too.

My Slice of Humble Pie

So what does her sleep now look like?

On a whole, she gets about seven and a half to eight hours of sleep per night. When you break it down, it looks something like this:

As you can see, my girlfriend is sleeping much better than I imagined

Check out my sleep below, then look at my girlfriend’s graph above.  Similar sleep schedule, similar ZQs and similar sleep quality.  Our sleep architecture is a little different, but certainly not outside the realm of “typical”.

A typical night of sleep for me

So while my little experiment backfired — my girlfriend now has dibs on the “I told you so”–it succeeded in different ways.

My editor, Andi, said it best: “That’s the great thing about science: even when it doesn’t turn out the way you expect, it still tells you something interesting.”

*Sigh*

Indeed.
