Finisar Shares Popped: What You Need to Know

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Finisar (Nasdaq: FNSR  ) popped 10% in intraday trading today after an analyst upgraded the stock.

So what: Citi Investment Research upgraded the stock from hold to buy, and raised its price target to $24 from $16.50. The analyst explained that he sees an opportunity for the stock's growth, expectations are "fully reset," and the stock has a "rational" valuation.

Now what: Finisar stock fell from more than $43 at the end of February to $18.67 at yesterday's close, thanks to an earnings miss and disappointing outlook in March, followed by a disappointing update to guidance in June. What's more, my Foolish colleague Seth Jayson recently noted that Finisar's earnings aren't so hot. With EPS expected to fall 40% in the coming year, and a forward P/E ratio of 20.7 times, it seems hard to justify the current price unless earnings expectations are far too low.

Wealth Losses, Percentages Do Not Tell Everything

The NYT wrote a piece based on a new study from Pew that finds that Hispanic families were the ones hardest hit by the economic downturn. The basis for this assertion is that they experienced the largest percentage decline in median wealth.

This is somewhat misleading. According to the study, the median wealth for Hispanics was just $18,400 prior to the downturn. The collapse of house prices led this to fall to just $6,200 in 2009, a 66 percent decline. However, it is possible to have such a large percentage decline because the median family had so little wealth to begin with. A family with $18,400 in wealth is not in a very different situation than a family with $6,200 in wealth. In both cases, such families are probably looking to a retirement where they are almost entirely dependent on Social Security or other pension programs.

By comparison, the wealth of the median white family fell by almost $32,000 from $135,000 to $113,100. The median Asian family saw their wealth decline by more than $90,000, from $168,100 to $78,100. These declines are likely to have much larger impacts on living standards. The median wealth for African Americans fell from $12,100 to $5,700. This also is a large percentage decline, but one that is likely to have a limited impact on living standards since the initial wealth was already so low.

Why The Amazon Tablet Will Be Killer (AMZN, AAPL)

The Amazon tablet is coming in the Fall, and all evidence points to its being a killer device.

Tech gadget review site Retrevo polled their users and found out that what they want in a tablet is what Amazon can give them: namely, lower prices and a trusted brand.

Their survey says what prospective tablet customers want most is lower prices:

What's more, customers trust the Amazon brand to make a great tablet more than most customer electronics brand (also: look at how badly RIM is doing):

And while most people prefer an iPad, there's also a lot of people who are open to buying some other tablet:

Amazon is best positioned to make a really good tablet at cheap prices for the following reasons:

  • Scale. Amazon is huge and can team up with an OEM to drive down prices for an Amazon tablet.

  • Distribution. Amazon owns the world's biggest shopping mall. Retailers' cut are a huge part of the price of tablets, and Apple and Amazon are the only ones who have their own huge retail operation. What's more, Amazon already has deals in place with retailers to sell its Kindle e-reader, so it stands to reason it could also sell tablets through them.

  • Media. Amazon has its app store, its Kindle e-book platform, its MP3 shop and an increasingly good video store.

  • Product experience/design. The Kindle is a great device, and Jeff Bezos is a product visionary. No one expects an Amazon tablet to be better than an iPad, but there's no reason why they can't make a tablet that's very good at a very good value.

Understanding Debt Relief

[WizardRSS: unable to retrieve full-text content]

Orlando, Fl -- Let's face it, debt repayments are a major component of every household budget, whether it be for the repayment of a mortgage loan, car loan, or credit cards. Every month consumers are faced with the reality that they owe someone (or someplace) money, and they factor those payments into their budget. The majority of these debts carry very long repayment timelines and often consumers can find themselves at a point in their life where their income is not sufficient to maintain the repayment terms of their debts (for the purposes of this article we are referring specifically to unsecured debts- credit cards, signature loans, store cards, gas cards, etc.).
