Could Lap the Field in the Summer Movie Toy Race

Shopping at a Manhattan Kmart with her 8-year-old son Jonathan, Lisa Velez quickly gravitated to the red Lightning McQueen miniature car from Cars 2, the Disney (DIS) sequel. She squeezed the chassis, and the car cheered, "Go! Go! Go!" Velez was hooked. "I think he's funny, serious, scared and he wants to try," she told DailyFinance.

Cars 2 doesn't open until June 24, but its toy line is already revving up the summer movie-toy season. Sales of Cars 2 merchandise will surpass Disney's entire Toy Story franchise within 12 months, predicted industry observer Jim Silver, editor in chief of TimetoPlaymag.com. "It's all about playing cars and the personalities of the cars," he said.

Silver said this summer is the most crowded movie-toy field he has seen in the last 25 years. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Thor and Kung Fu Panda 2 have already opened, with entries such as X-Men: First Class (June 3), Green Lantern (June 17), Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon (July 1) , Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (July 15), and Captain America: The First Avenger (July 22) awaiting their theatrical runs. All have promotional toys associated with them -- most in stores already.

On the surface, the true toy competition would appear to be between Mattel-driven Cars 2 and Hasbro-generated Transformers 3 from Paramount. Both are multibillion-dollar properties, and Mattel (MAT) and Hasbro (HAS) are the Hatfields and McCoys of the toy trade. But it may not be much of a shootout, because the products do not compete for the same age group, Silver said. The Cars line skews toward kids 3 to 6 while Transformers generally appeals to 6 and older. That leaves little overlap and "plenty to go around," he said. (Harry Potter has the Lego construction market cornered, but generates less magic in the action-figure category.)

Disney's Marketing Never Slows Down

Disney earned scorn when it tried to trademark "SEAL Team 6" -- the name of the elite squad that killed Osama Bin Laden -- for use in games and snow globes. (Disney eventually withdrew its bid.) But it was a rare misstep for a company that lapped the field last year in merchandising. Disney Consumer Products (DCP), the merchandising arm, amassed a world-leading $28.6 billion in licensed product sales in 2010, a 5.1% increase over its No. 1 $27.2 billion in 2009, License! Global magazine announced in its annual survey. Disney tallied more profit than the next three companies combined -- and the Mouse House's total didn't even include what it raked in from its Marvel superhero stable. Last summer's Toy Story 3 accounted for $2.4 billion, but could be choking on the exhaust of Cars 2 by the time it crosses the finish line.

The Cars sequel's subject matter and promotional spin-offs create the perfect marketing storm for children, according to Adrienne Appell, spokeswoman for the Toy Industry Association. The toys "incorporate classic play patterns," she said. "What little boy doesn't love cars?"

Even after the original Cars opened in 2006, Disney kept its marketing pedal to the metal to generate more than $8 billion in Cars merchandising revenue through February 2011, the company said. For the sequel, the company unveiled a line of 300 toys. And they're catching the eye of their target market.

"From [diapers] to the wallpaper, it's all Cars," Kmart (SHLD) shopper Supreme Pellot said of his 3-year-old son, Bryan.

A DailyFinance survey of the Kmart shelves revealed that Disney was winning the affordability race as well. Its lowest-priced movie toy cost less than the competition's -- at least in the store we visited. The Cars 2 miniature cars, including a talking version of Lightning McQueen, was $4.39. A Tigress vs. Gorilla action-figure set from Kung Fu Panda 2 was $5.99. A Green Lantern mask and power ring pack rang in at $7.69, followed by a Transformers 3 Optimus Prime Autobot at $8.79.

Once upon a time, back in 1929, Walt Disney licensed the image of Mickey Mouse to appear on a notepad. More than eight decades later, the company still doesn't play around when it comes to merchandising.

Reclaiming the True Meaning of Stewardship

When most people hear the word stewardship, they grab their wallet or purse, either to open it or get a firmer grip.

But as Chris Goulard, Pastor of Stewardship at Saddeback Church, would tell you, there?s a movement going on in the church today: a movement back to true, biblical stewardship.

Over the years, many well-meaning churches have misused the term stewardship. ?Many have mischaracterized it and used it interchangeably with giving or?even worse?the annual stewardship message from the pastor who?s just talked about tithing,? Chris said. This has got to stop.

Giving is important, but it?s just one piece of the puzzle. ?I would love to see the word reclaimed,? he said.

Goulard?s Take On Stewardship

Where do we start in reclaiming a word that?s become so widely misunderstood? First, by clearly defining stewardship in our own minds. ?Stewardship is foundationally understanding that we are not owners of things, but managers,? Chris said.

He believes that at its core, stewardship is actually very simple. It basically boils down to three major points:

1. God owns it all.
2. We are all stewards.
3. We have a responsibility to manage it for His glory.

?If we understood these pieces, we would do things differently and everything would fall into place,? Chris said.

Once we have clearly defined stewardship ourselves, it?s time to communicate the message to the congregation. As you know, people resist change! That?s why it?s so important to be bold, clear and convincing when offering a paradigm shift.

?Don?t be afraid to push people,? Chris said. ?Look, if you?re going to call yourself a follower of Christ, what does that mean? If you?re going to be a disciple, you have to get dirty and be a little bit different. Jesus said, ?Take up your cross and follow me.? We have to be willing to go against the grain.? If we shy away from that truth, even though it?s one people may not like to hear, they may miss the whole point of stewardship.

Chris also encourages leaders to work to help people change their heart, not just their situation, by sharing the biblical truths about stewardship. ?In the church, we have a unique opportunity to talk about this in a different way and really dive into a biblical perspective on things, not just get people out of immediate pain.?

Stewardship At Saddleback

The stewardship ministry at Saddleback has grown exponentially since it began just seven years ago. One way they engage such a large number of people is to offer a broad range of resources.

Every member of the congregation needs to be financially discipled, but many people don?t see their own need. Yet, a topic they see as relevant can draw them in to learn what God?s Word says about money. For example, someone may not see or admit a need to attend a budgeting workshop. ?But if we start with giving them tools to teach their kids about money, then they?ll come. Same thing with a class on estate planning. It opens the door,? Chris said.

And while stewardship may not be something that?s widely taught at seminary, Chris has seen that having a pastor who understands the importance of it is key. ?The majority of people in the church are in the middle of the bell curve?not in extreme wealth or poverty, but middle class. You reach these people from the pulpit very strongly by a pastor who lives it out.?

It?s not easy to teach stewardship, but Chris believes it?s essential to our growth as believers. ?If you get the foundation of what stewardship is in the simplest sense?that you are a steward and not an owner?and a strong desire to follow God, then you?re off to the races.?

These Cold Stocks Are Heating Up

When a stock's share price is lower than a North Dakota thermometer in February, investors tend to give it the cold shoulder. But as the market warms to a stock's prospects, its price can heat up in a hurry. Alas, you can rarely tell that a stock is melting investors' hearts until after it's made that upward leap.

Taking the market's temperature
But Motley Fool CAPS' proprietary ratings, aggregated from the opinions and accuracy of 170,000-plus members, offer a great way to monitor investor sentiment. Following a CAPS rating trend can help us determine the best time to invest. Let's look at previously rated one- or two-star companies that have recently enjoyed a bump in investor confidence and see whether they're truly heating up -- or headed back to the deep freeze.

Obviously, this is not a list of stocks to buy -- just a starting point for further research. Yet if some of the best investing minds are taking notice of these stocks, maybe we should, too. 

The world's hottest videos
It's no surprise that video is the next frontier for content. For example, while blogging is still big, video blogging -- or vlogging is gaining momentum. BlogTV is one outlet combining vlogging with instant messaging to create a new level of interactive experience. Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX  ) might be the best representation yet of the positive experience consumers have of video on demand.

KIT digital seeks to fully embrace this new wave of videography by providing end-to-end solutions via a cloud-based software-as-a-service. For example, it helped package the royal wedding simultaneously across multiple types of IP-enabled devices, such as TVs, mobile phones, tablets, and computers. The company's share count has risen from 4.8 million shares in June 2009 to almost 40 million in its most recent quarterly filing. Share count has risen by two-thirds just since last September.

Getting paid
Last month, The Wall Street Journal raised concerns over whether the high price of Questcor Pharmaceuticals' top drug, Acthar, which is used to treat multiple sclerosis and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treatment of infantile spasms, would cause it to stumble because of Medicaid rebate requests from the government in the wake of health-care reform.

Apparently, those concerns haven't slowed the company down. Prescriptions for Acthar more than doubled in the quarter, generating 40% higher revenues for Questcor. Its reserves for the rebates represent less than a quarter of the nearly $50 million in gross sales it generated.

Acthar also faces competition from Solu-Medrol, an MS drug produced by Pfizer  (NYSE: PFE  ) , and Lundbeck's Sabril, which tackles it in the infantile spasm market. Revenge is a dish best served cold
Living well is the best revenge, they say, and Thoratec may be playing that out. Earlier this year, analysts at JPMorgan Chase reiterated a neutral rating after the medical devices maker made an apparently uninspiring presentation at a health-care conference and emerging competition from the likes of Heartware International (Nasdaq: HTWR  ) , which was coming to market with smaller, less-invasive pumps.

But Thoratec is still the industry leader with products actually on the market. The risk of betting on unproven devices was borne out when data was released showing Heartware's mechanical heart-assist device increasing the risk of heart-pump-related thrombosis. It might still make it to market, but Thoratec's much lower level risk will allow it to continue commanding a premium.

Shares of Thoratec have rebounded more than 50% from the lows they hit in February, and 86% of the CAPS members rating the medical device maker believe shares will continue to outperform the broad indexes. Head over to the Thoratec CAPS page and pump up the opinions about its future.
