Yep, Shoppers Started Camping Out For Black Friday This Wednesday

Yes, it’s advantageous to line up for an irresistible sale early. A duo of California shoppers were a little too early to this year’s Black Friday sale at their local Best Buy, though, camping outside of the store more than a week ahead of time. Security staff booted them off the property, asking them to return on Thanksgiving. Thank Providence … [More]

Man Claims He Was Stabbed By T-Mobile Employee During Dispute Over His Bill

Sure, there are times when we’re arguing with a customer service rep or a grumpy sales associate where it feels like discussions are about to erupt in fisticuffs, but usually it’s all a bunch of hot air. Not so for one T-Mobile customer who claims he walked away from a bill dispute at a store with a stab wound to … [More]

Skyscrapers Are Skinnier Than Ever

one madison parkIt's not new that being thin is trendy.

Maybe a little more shocking is that this trend is also true in the real estate market.

Buildings are thinner than ever, especially in places where there isn't much space to build, according to The Wall Street Journal's Eliot Brown.

The trend isn't only being seen in New York. Skinny buildings have been in Hong Kong for years, and are just now popping up in Tel Aviv and Vancouver, Brown notes.

Until recently, architects would design highrises with larger floors that were more stable and spanned around 10,000 square feet.

Now, super-luxury buildings such as the still-under-construction One57, 432 Park Avenue, and One Madison Park are cropping up with skinny bases, at 6,240, 8,250, and 3,300 square feet, respectively.

Thin is in because of advances in architecture and design, Brown notes. But it's also become trendy in places like New York where unused space is scarce, and buyers are willing to pay for the views afforded by higher floors.

Vancouver, British Columbia developer Jon Stovell, who last year finished a 350-foot tower that has 4,850-square-foot floors, told The WSJ, "If you can build more slender and higher, you can get more units with good views—and height is valued."

Taliban Accidentally Reveals All The Addresses On Its Email List

taliban-fighters-turn-selves-in

In what is perhaps one of the most embarrassing, potentially lethal online faux pas in recent memory, a Taliban spokesperson accidentally forgot to conceal the identity of everyone on its email list when sending out a routine press release last week.

ABC News reports that the names were disclosed when Taliban spokesperson Qari Yousuf Ahmedi forgot to use the BCC function, and instead CC'ed the list, effectively making the addresses available to the public

The list is made up of mostly local and international journalists, but includes email addresses of academics, activists, and two that appear to belong to a provincial governor and an Afghan legislator, respectively.

Afghanistan-based journalist Mustafa Kazemi tweeted the following after the list was made public"Taliban have included all 4 of my email addresses on the leaked distribution list. Quite reassuring to my safety."

Kazemi added that "On that Taliban email where they disclosed all 500 recipients' email addresses, there is a large number of Taliban personnel email also."

Ahmedi did not respond to ABC for comment.

Visionary Leadership and American Energy

On this day in economic and financial history...

Energy panics have a way of forcing rapid action in an ordinarily sluggish government. Just one month after OPEC began a crippling oil embargo on the United States on Nov. 16, 1973, President Richard Nixon signed the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act into law. His signature plowed through any environmental and legal objections, clearing the way for the pipeline's construction and the widespread exploration of oil in the Last Frontier.

Nixon's signing sent a brief spark of hope through the markets, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEX: ^DJI  ) closed with a 2% gain after enduring a 10% slide following the start of the embargo. It wouldn't last, as the deep bear market of the early 1970s would continue for another year.

The pipeline -- the largest construction project in the world at that point with an estimated cost of $8 billion -- would be built by a consortium of oil companies known as the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company. Their names and ownership stakes at the time of the signing were: Atlantic Richfield, with 28%; Standard Oil of Ohio (in which BP (NYSE: BP  ) held a controlling interest), with 28%; Exxon, with 26%; Mobil, with 9%; Phillips, with 3%; Union Oil, with 3%; and Amerada Hess at 3%. Today, following a series of mergers, acquisitions, and sales, BP holds 47% control due to its acquisition of Atlantic Richfield. ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) holds 28%, and ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) holds 20%.

The pipeline had a transformative effect on the Alaskan economy. The state's oil production as a percentage of total American output peaked at 25% in 1988, and in 2011 the 209 million barrels of oil produced in Alaska made up about 10% of total American oil production. More than 16 billion barrels of oil have gone through the Trans-Alaska Pipeline since it first became operational.

As with any major oil and gas development, the pipeline and its connected fields have a finite lifetime. Production was peaked at 2 million barrels per day in 1988 but has since shrunk by 63%. The Alaska Resource Development Council estimates that some $60 billion may be needed to stave off steeper declines and develop new oil sources for the pipeline. To counteract the gradual declines in Alaskan oil production that now appear inevitable, a new Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline has been proposed at a cost of between $30 billion to $40 billion. If it's completed, this natural-gas pipeline will take the crown as the largest such construction project in the world.

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"
Steve Jobs called it "a profound experience, one of the most important things in my life." He also suggested that Bill Gates would have benefited from it. If you've ever seen Pirates of Silicon Valley, you probably know what "it" is. It is lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD, first synthesized on Nov. 16, 1938.

This isn't to suggest that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL  ) wouldn't exist without Steve Jobs' experimentation. But it might be an unrecognizable company to those who've grown up with sleek iDevices. Think...different.

A New Plan for Our Economy

Dave Ramsey is on fire!

Don?t worry folks; he?s going to be okay. Just like the stop, drop and roll response you practiced in elementary school, Dave?s got a plan.

Unlike your plan, however, his will ignite a nation.

For more than four years he?s watched our country face an economic downturn so deep that depression and fear settled like a blanket across the land. Our people are weary, and our hope is gone.

Politics won?t fix the mess we?re in. Fortunately, the church can. Last summer, Dave addressed pastors across the country, inviting them to join him in launching a Great Recovery.

You can check out the video to watch the full event or read through the main points below.

  • People are suffering. The economy bottomed out in 2008, and financial fear became rampant. Our nation continues to endure the harsh realities of a downed economy and the relentless pounding of hopelessness from the media.
  • Hopelessness invades our spirit and attitude. Individuals are holding back financially because they?re worried about the future. They aren?t spending like they once were, and those with money and jobs aren?t giving like they once did.
  • God is the true author of hope. God provides by pouring into us creativity, work ethic, ingenuity and initiative. He also gives us the power to be diligent and excellent over an extended period of time so that we may prosper. That?s hope!
  • The economy consists of millions and millions of individuals like me and you, and most of them aren?t doing well. They?re spending money they don?t have to buy things they can?t afford to impress people they don?t like. They are deeply in debt, with no savings and no plan.
  • If you fix the individuals, you fix the economy. This idea is counter-cultural because as a society, we?ve come to count on the government to rescue us. Unfortunately, the disease is at the base of the tree, not the branches.
  • When people decide to do things God?s ways, the result is revival. As the vaccine for hopelessness, the church earns the right to speak into people?s lives. The church can even provide insight on God?the original author of this ?new way? to handle money. Through this effort, many people will be introduced to Jesus and come to know him.
  • The time is now. There is a great vacuum in the marketplace, and our country is ripe for a movement. Only the church, which is the haven of hope, can walk in and give real answers.

Can you grasp the vision? Imagine what would take place in your home if you began to handle money God?s ways. Consider the change in your church, community, state and nation. By relying on God for our hope, we would experience a covering of peace and joy instead of fear and depression.

Will you join the effort? James 4:17 says, ?Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.? As Christians, we know our mission is to bring others into a relationship with God. We are also to care for those who are in financial despair. This is the best opportunity for the church to meet the two most pressing needs of our day.

We invite you to partner with Dave and ignite a fire across our nation!

Man Finds Out Who Shot His Brother From Article About 'Shirtless' FBI Agent

Frederick Humphries

Ron Bullock never knew who shot his 61-year-old brother Ronnie at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla., in 2010.

Today he learned—through an Associated Press story—that it was Fredrick Humphries IIthe FBI agent who started the investigation that eventually brought down David Petraeus, M.L. Nestel of The Daily reports.

From AP:

On May 19, 2010, 61-year-old Army veteran Ronald J. Bullock, who was camping at the base, got into an altercation with base security.

Officials said Bullock sped off on a motorcycle, but was stopped by other security officers and Humphries as he tried to exit a gate. They said he got off the motorcycle and came at Humphries and the officers while brandishing a knife. Humphries fired, killing Bullock. The shooting was later ruled justified.

Initially the FBI told the Bullock family to file a FOIA request to receive information about the attack, but the family decided against it. Now Bullock wants to know why Humphries had to fatally shoot his brother.

“I was a military policeman,” Bullock told The Daily. “They had guns and he had a knife. You’d think with some of the training the MPs had they could have disarmed him some way. The FBI agent shouldn’t have shot him in the heart.”
