Workers Start Slacking Off When Their Bosses Suddenly Get More Controlling [STUDY]

Firms build teams because they work. Once people get to know each other better, they can divide work more efficiently and even build motivation through a sense of teamwork.

New research from Gerhard Riener and Simon Wiederhold of the Heinrich?Heine?Universität in Dusseldorf tests that effect, and found it to be true at a very basic level. In a task with a designated leader and follower, people who had previous experience working with the leader significantly outperformed those who had none.

That familiarity can have a drawback, which has important implications for leaders and companies. People who already worked with a leader expected less control from their leaders, and when they were more controlling than expected, they felt betrayed and retaliated by exerting less effort.

This graph illustrates the effect. Effort and cooperation drops much more for the CE group (experience with the leader) than the NCE group (no experience):

Control

Part of what makes a group work is trust, which is one of the things that produced the initial productivity increase the study found.

If leaders are open about any changes in group structure or responsibilities, and take the time to register concerns, they can avoid this drop off in performance.

My Flight Was Canceled Due To Sandy, Frontier Airlines Doesn?t Bother To Tell Me

If your flight gets canceled, how are you supposed to find out? Melinda was scheduled to fly on Frontier Airlines, and figured that her flight would get canceled due to Hurricane Sandy. She at least expected a robocall from the airline once the cancellation happened. Or for her flight info to no longer be in the “flight checker.”

I’m not

Mapping The Lack Of Parity In The NBA

If you want to win in the NBA, you need superstars. Below is look at the top 20 players in the NBA over the last two seasons based on Win Shares, a statistic that measures the overall impact a player has on his team's chances of winning a basketball game.

Only 12 teams have at least one top-20 player, leaving 18 teams with almost no hope of winning an NBA title this season. Two teams, the Lakers and Heat, have three such players each.

Of course, this is based on the past two season and certainly some of these guys are getting older (e.g. Kevin Garnett), and some younger players may be ready to jump up into this group (e.g. Andrew Bynum). But until that happens, this is the map of superstars in the NBA (click on image for a larger version)...

How Stocks Performed After The Worst Hurricanes

S&P Sam Stovall Strategist

The stock market is pretty unpredictable, especially in the near-term.

As the U.S. east coast gets hit by the storm of the century, should investors expect stocks to tank?

If history's a guide, not necessarily.

"History says that hurricanes typically don't trigger market declines," notes S&P Capital IQ's Sam Stovall via USA Today.

In a new research note, Stovall looked at how stocks performed in the wake of the last 13 most disastrous hurricanes as measured by cost since 1965.

He found that the S&P 500 climbed an average 3.9 percent over the three months after the storm and 5.8 percent over the next six months.

"Equities are more likely driven by wider-reaching global events than localized natural disasters," he writes.

Indeed, after Hurricane Ike in August 2008, the S&P 500 tanked 30 percent in three months and 43 in six. Those sell-offs were certainly attributed to the bursting of the U.S. housing market and credit bubbles.

BUILDING FACADE COLLAPSES IN MANHATTAN AT 8TH AND 14TH STREET

A four-story building facade has collapsed at 8th Ave and 14th Street in Manhattan.

No one was injured, though there were people inside when the facade fell, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said on CNN.

The building at 92 8th Ave in Chelsea included multiple high-end apartments, which rented for $4,395/month according to Huff Po's Meg Robertson. A restaurant called Muscle Maker Grill was on the ground floor.

Similar collapses have been reported in Brooklyn and Queens, plus there's the hanging crane in Midtown

Here's a photo from Gilad Lotan on twitter:

Here's One Reason Microsoft Thinks It's Failing To Sell Smartphones (MSFT)

windows phone 8

Microsoft latest attempt to make a dent in the smartphone market is Windows Phone 8.

Windows Phone 8 is an update to its mobile operating system, which has failed to grab marketshare for Microsoft. In fact, since Microsoft rebooted its mobile software, it's lost marketshare in the U.S. according to comScore. In November 2010 Microsoft had 9% of the smartphone market. The latest comScore data says its at 3.6%.

Microsoft was late to the market, so it makes sense it's not beating Apple or Google. But, considering Windows Phone has not been totally panned by critics, and Microsoft has spent hundreds of millions on marketing and partnerships, it's somewhat surprising it lost market share.

Why has Microsoft failed in mobile? We asked head of communications Frank X. Shaw at Microsoft's launch event for Windows 8 (its normal operating system).

One reason sales haven't been strong, according to Shaw, is that Microsoft's presence at carrier stores has been weak. The majority of smartphone sales happen at carrier stores. So, if say, your Verizon sales associate uses an Android phone, or an iPhone she's going to be inclined to recommend an Android phone or an iPhone.

Until recently, Microsoft wasn't getting its phones in the hands of the carrier retailers, which Shaw thinks is at least part of the reason Microsoft hasn't been able to win market share.

Obviously this isn't the only reason, but it's one small thing, and it's something Microsoft can fix.
