The Gun Control Debate Needs To Stop Focusing Entirely On Mass Shootings

aurora colorado shooting denver

The unspeakable tragedy at a Connecticut elementary school last month has inspired renewed calls for gun control in the United States.

It's hard to ignore the slaughter of 20 first-graders and six teachers, especially since they died months after a mass murder at a Colorado movie theater.

At a meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee today, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, ticked off several recent mass murders, noting that "America abhors the recent tragedies."

In response to these tragedies, President Obama has called on Congress to reinstate the expired ban on assault weapons frequently used by mass killers and to take steps to ensure mentally ill people like Adam Lanza can't get guns.

But most people who get shot to death in this country don't die in a movie theater or at a shopping mall at the hands of a crazed gunman. Most are killed by somebody they know.

Mass shootings are relatively rare, as The New York Times has pointed out.

Roughly 75 percent of homicides in 2011 were committed by a family member or acquaintance of some type, according to FBI statistics.

Nearly 68 percent of those deaths involved firearms, but most of those victims don't make national headlines and aren't the subject of Senate hearings.

Even more invisible are the people who kill themselves with guns. According to a 2009 report cited by the CDC, roughly half of suicides were committed by firearms.

Since suicide can be impulsive, at least some of those people wouldn't have died if it weren't for firearms.

There's no easy way to make sure fewer people get killed by their loved ones or kill themselves with guns.

But focusing the debate almost entirely on the mass shootings that grab headlines ignores the biggest casualties of gun violence.

Here Are The Most Dangerous Cities To Take Out A Mortgage

mortgage, crying, Milliken, Colorado

The housing market has been improving significantly for nearly a year at this point, but with those upticks in activity across the board in the last several months, it seems that instances of potential fraud also increased.

The total amount of possible mortgage fraud nationwide rose 1.1 percent from July to September 2012 from the previous quarter, according to new statistics from Kroll Factual Data.

And while there were increases in every region across the country, these were caused not by low-level jumps in most places, but rather massive leaps in specific metropolitan areas.

For instance, Flint, Michigan, saw an increase in potential mortgage fraud on a quarterly basis of 50.32 percent, by far the largest of any metropolitan statistical area in which at least 1,000 applications were processed in the quarter, the report said.

The next-closest increase for any one city was in Columbia, Missouri, where potential fraud spiked 29.77 percent, and Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s jump totaled 28.83 percent. Tacoma, Washington (25.68 percent) and Santa Fe, New Mexico (24.24 percent) rounded out the top five increases.

“This spike in potential fraud is troubling, coming at the same time the mortgage industry is beginning to turn the corner,” said Rob Bazzani, president of Kroll Factual Data.

“More importantly, the fact that red flags are rising in every area of the country highlights the continued need for lenders to remain vigilant against fraud. In addition, the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau restrictions — whose ultimate goal is to ensure a borrower can repay a mortgage over its entire term — raise the stakes for lenders to catch fraud or inadvertent errors that might compromise lending decisions or risk buy-back requests.”

On the other hand, a number of cities also saw significant declines in potential mortgage fraud, though those declines weren’t enough to make up for the surges seen elsewhere, the report said. Champaign-Urbana, Illinois; Bridgeport-Milford, Connecticut; and San Francisco-Oakland, California all saw declines of 18 percent or more, and a number of other cities also came in with drops of more than 17 percent.

Experts say the housing market should continue to recover over the next year at least, as rising prices will urge more sellers into the market, which will in turn meet already-high buyer demand that has been boosted by interest rates hovering at or near record lows.

There Are A Bunch Of Reasons That Foot Locker Shouldn't Be Ignored

Foot Locker

Foot Locker is looking good right now, according to a note from Citigroup analyst Kate McShane.

Foot Locker's business has been on the rise this year, thanks in part to a boost in basketball shoe sales.

Here are five reasons McShane expects Foot Locker to keep things up:

1. Basketball is booming. The sporting goods sector rose 15.3 percent from October to December of last year and should help the company make gains in shoe sales.

2. Making a buck from brands. Nike products are hitting their stride, with sales numbers staying strong.

3. Earning market share from the competition. Finish Line reported only break even profits per share in the third quarter, giving Foot Locker room to step in and gain more sales.

4. A vendor advantage. The company has a solid footing with vendor partnerships.

5. Premium has been a priority. Foot Locker added new premium products to its shelves every day during Thanksgiving week.
